The Chicago Black Sox hired a new assistant general manager to replace the retiring John Pruitt, who opted not to make the move north with the team from Huntsville to Chicago.

The Sox replaced him with Bill McGuffin, a relatively unproven front office administrator who team officials said was:
  • A comfortable philosophical fit, and …
  • Cheap.
McGuffin signed a 2-year contract at $150,000 annually to assist GM Vic Caleca.

Front office sources said McGuffin appealed to Caleca and to team owner Vinnie Vitale because he believes in building a team through the draft and international free agency while largely eschewing trades.

“We’ll sign some free agents, sure, but we’re gonna try to develop our own talent and sink or swim with that,” Caleca said. “Plus, Vinnie won’t let me trade.”

McGuffin has no previous baseball front office experience, but did run the night shift at the Russelville, KY, Piggly Wiggly and reputedly crushed his opposition in the store’s Fantasy Football league.

“It’s not a perfect resume for a big league job,” one office assistant observed, “and you wish his fantasy sports experience had been baseball instead of football. But, that being said, his credentials are better than Caleca’s.”

But can he drive a tow truck?
Was the fantasy league a keeper league?
Is he a distant relation to our commissioner, Matt RectGuffin?

So many unanswered questions.

Sounds like one of many recent applicants could be a great fit as Chicago's Assistant General Manager.
