The Chicago Black Sox have released a diagram of their new playing field, along with artists’ conceptions of the stadium currently under construction in Calumet City, a southern suburb.
Team owner Vinnie Vitale commissioned Chicago architect Randall Howe to recreate, as closely as possible, the look and feel of the classic Comiskey Park, home of the Chicago White Sox for decades.
“We wanted to honor the history of Chicago baseball – down to the retro ‘exploding scoreboard’ in center field – while also offering fans the best in modern stadium design,” said GM Vic Caleca. “Mr. Howe, we believe, has succeeded admirably.”
Some critics have questioned the move, though.
“Why not go for something new?” asked Myron Skowronick, a local architect and architecture critic. “This seems needlessly redundant.”
Fans who bothered to take notice seemed to like the look – or at least not hate it.
Mike Fellowes, a self-described lifelong Black Sox fan, said he likes the look.
“Baseball is a game of traditions, right? This is a very traditional look – and a very traditional Chicago look. I like it,” he said.
Leslie Noonan of suburban Cicero was neutral, though.
“Looks like a baseball stadium to me, so that’s fine,” said Leslie Noonan. “I don’t follow sports myself.”
Stadium construction is scheduled to continue throughout the offseason and be concluded by the time the 2040 season opens in April.
