Phantoms Phanatics Week in Review Sept. 1-7, 2039

Huntsville played some games, they won a few, lost more, finished the week 3-4. Some guys hit, more guys didn’t, there was bad starting pitching and worse relief pitching and yada, yada, yada …

Enough about Huntsville.

Let’s get to the good stuff: AAA Carolina won the GL East Coast Division by half a game over the Gotham Heroes (Jacksonville) and will start the Brewster Invitational Round of the playoffs starting, well, today!

Now, don’t ask why Gotham played three fewer games than Carolina (or anyone else in the league, for that matter). Rainouts that weren’t made up, we’d guess. That kind of thing is above our pay grade, anyway. Just know that the Flight took 2 of 3 in that crucial end-of-season series against the Heroes and snatched away the division title.

Not that it mattered all that much, given that Gotham took the wild card to get into the playoffs and will play ... Carolina.

So now, the two teams square off in a best-of-3 series for the right to face the winner of the Havana (New Orleans) and Milwaukee (Vegas) series.

Granted, it’s just the minor leagues … but, then again, so is Huntsville …

News and Notes

Although September is roster expansion time, Huntsville actually sent a couple of players back to AAA to help Carolina (already short a player) cover an injury to RF Jaime Geerdinkck. The Phantoms returned 3B Robert Ayala to the Flight and, for good measure, sent SP Hector Reyes back, too, to help in the playoffs … C Diesel Dave is on fire, but do not tell him to stop, drop and roll. For the month of August, the team captain slashed .400/.478/.725 and has kept things going so far in September with a .385/.385/.846 line. He’s got 12 homers and 32 RBIs in 45 games for the season, now, and is starting to take lineup time away from starting catcher Hotha Popo … Although the team has melted down (3-10 since hitting .500 at the end of August), sources say team morale has never been better. In fact, they characterize the mood as “ecstatic.” Either team trainer Wakie Mellouk has access to powerful mood enhancers, or the players have realized they’re almost set to leave Alabama in their rearview mirror for good. Either way, it’s a little odd. But, hey, at least someone’s in a good mood!

AAA Carolina went 3-2 to close out its regular season, finishing at 77-58 atop the GL East Coast Division by 0.5 games over Gotham. The best-of-3 playoff series against the Heroes starts today in Gotham, and then moves to Carolina to finish up … RP Marcos Díaz has been throwing well of late: he’s pitched 21.1 IP over his last 8 games, with a 0.84 ERA, 1 save, and 23 Ks … AA Beloit closed out its season on the winning side of the ledger, winning its final game against Winston-Salem (Rockville). The Blue Sox finished the year at 67-64, good for 3rd place in the DNL Mid-Central Division 12 games behind Duluth … Single A Grand Junction, likewise, won its final game of the year to finish 59-72. The Gold Sox ended the season in 3rd place in the PL West Central Division, 8 games behind Pahrump … San Pedro de Macoris went 3-4 last week, dropping its season record to 30-37. The Green Sox, who have three games left on their schedule, are in 4th place in the SL2 Big Islands Division, 10.5 games behind Santo Domingo … SP Tsurayaki Saito has been pitching well at the tail end of the season. In his last 4 appearances, he’s throw 31.0 innings and gone 2-1 with a 0.87 ERA and 17 Ks … Rookie League affiliate Monclova dropped its final two games of the year to finish at 30-34, in 5th place in the HL Mexican-American Division. The Aqua Sox were 11 games behind first place Ogden … LF Hao Hang finished on a nice streak, going 7-23 in his final 6 games, a .304 BA with 4 HRs and 9 RBIs. He finished the season with 16 HRs, one less than the 5 co-leaders who each had 17. Hang also finished among the leaders in RBIs: his 42 ribbies were good for third – 3 off the pace. Hang’s final slash line for the year was .276/.331/.612.
