Phantoms Phanatics Week in Review: Aug. 11 – 17

Go figure.

Huntsville posted its second consecutive 5-2 week, climbing to within two games of .500 and positioning themselves just 3.5 games out of the third wildcard spot in the Johnson League.

All of this, mind you, is four weeks removed from the front office declaring that the team was effectively out of the running for a playoff spot and would turn its eyes to the future.

Shows what management knows.

Perhaps the powers that be should make that declaration every year – maybe around the second week of April …

Batter of the Week

Norris Rutledge, DH: 14 AB, 5 H, 4 HR, 14 RBI, .357 AVG, 1.756 OPS

Juan Nicto, SP: 1-0, 6.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 Ks

News and Notes

RF Manny Cleide suffered a high ankle sprain during the Aug. 15 loss at Phoenix in a collision at second base. He was placed on the Injured List and is expected to be sidelined for about three weeks … The Phantoms made two roster moves to bolster their depleted outfielding corps. Jaime Geerdinkck was brought up for a second go-round in Huntsville, taking Cleide’s roster slot. Geerdinck had a successful week-long stretch (.333/.333/.500) in the majors as an injury replacement early in the season. The Phantoms also sent struggling third baseman Victor Bedolla to Carolina and called up Craig Barber, who’s been having an excellent season for the AAA Flight. He recently was named the RHML Batter of the Month for July, and is slashing .290/.360/.507 with 14 HRs and 53 RBIs … RP C.J. Ischade had a tough week in the majors, called up to help a depleted bullpen and make a spot start. None of it went well, and he returned to Carolina at the end of the week after Huntsville successfully claimed RP Brian Soper on waivers from Yellow Springs. Soper will pitch in a setup role for now … That wasn’t the only dealing Huntsville had with Yellow Springs last week: the Nine outbid the Phantoms for free agent reliever Dean Stranaghan. Huntsville had been eying Stranaghan as minor league bullpen help.

AAA Carolina went 4-2 last week to take sole possession of first place in the GL East Coast Division. The Flight is now 68-49 on the year and has a two-game lead on Gotham … RP Justin Archer made his first appearances since his return from a two-month injury layoff. He appeared in two games, allowed no runs and notched one save … AA Beloit went 3-3 on the week to stay at .500 on the season, 60-60, and in third place in the DNL Mid-Central Division. The Blue Sox are 14.5 games behind first place Duluth … SP José Féliz, who signed a minor league free agent contract with the Phantoms in late June, has been a pleasant surprise. He’s 3-1 in his last 6 starts, with a 1.60 ERA and 36 Ks in 45.0 IP … Single-A Grand Junction had a 3-3 week, bringing its season record to 50-67. The Gold Sox are in third place in the PL West Central Division, 11.5 games behind first place Pahrump … C Dani Santos has been swinging a hot bat of late. He’s 8-21 in his last 9 games, good for a .381 BA with 2 HRs and 7 RBIs … Short-A affiliate San Pedro de Macoris went 4-2 on the week, raising its record to 24-26. The Green Sox are in fourth place in the tightly-bunched SL2 Big Islands Division, 5 games behind leader Santo Domingo … 2B Abelwahab Kigoma is 9 for 22 in his last 8 games – a .409 BA with 3 HRs and 6 RBIs. That performance earned him the SL2 Player of the Week Award … Rookie League affiliate Monclova was 4-3 last week, to improve its season record to 22-27. The Aqua Sox are in fifth place, 11 games behind first place Ogden … two-way player Paul Kemp came up lame with moderate back stiffness and is listed as day-to-day. Monclova management has decided to bench the young prospect for three days to give him time to heal. Kemp is 3-3 with a 3.14 ERA as a pitcher, but has struggled mightily at the plate, slashing .194/.233/.337 in a DH role.

Stranahan may be our best rookie ball pitcher.
