Phantoms Phanatics Week In Review

Huntsville opened its 2039 season with a bang and a fizzle: sweeping a two-game series at home against Atlantic City, then dropping two out of three against San Antonio on the road.

High Point: A victorious 8-5 Opening Day slugfest against the Gamblers, featuring home runs by 1B Emílio Lugo, DH Norris Rutledge, and CF Tim Torres.

Low Point: Justin Archer serving up a two-run gopher ball to San Antonio RF Mark White in the bottom of the 8th on April 7 to blow the rubber game of Huntsville’s series against the Outlaws.

Game of the Week

Second baseman Luis Gonzalez helped spark a dynamic Huntsville offense, going 4 for 5 with a triple and two doubles and leading his team to a dramatic 8-7 win over San Antonio on April 6. Still, it was the Phantoms’ new catcher – Hotha Popo, signed as a free agent on New Year’s Eve – who provided the decisive blow: an 8th inning RBI triple to give Huntsville its eventual winning run. The Phantoms needed the offensive explosion to offset an ineffective start by Alejandro Soto (5 runs, 4 ER, 5 hits in 5.1 IP) and an equally rough outing by reliever Frits Brinson (3 hits, 2 ER in 1.2 IP). Justin Archer, however, nailed down the win with two innings of scoreless relief to pick up his second save.

News and Notes

Manager Bret Richards has unleashed the hounds this season, giving his best base runners a green light to steal when the time is right. In the first week, Phantoms base runners stole 12 bases, tops in the JL … Phantoms hitters lit up opposing pitchers, ranking first in the JL for BA (.306); OBP (.373); SLG (.543) and OPS (.916) … Huntsville pitchers, on the other hand, were lit up themselves, ranking 14th in ERA (6.07), starters’ ERA (6.66) and 11th in bullpen ERA (5.30) … SP Vito Reyes will be on the shelf for 5 weeks with bone spurs in his pitching elbow. He came out of his April 7 start against San Antonio after pitching 4.2 innings and allowing 3 runs on 7 hits … Speculation was that top pitching prospect Amayas Moelling might be summoned from Carolina to make his BBA debut, but GM Vic Caleca opted to keep the youngster in AAA for awhile longer (presumably for contract reasons), and instead summoned François Mangin, who went 3-2 with a 3.17 ERA in 10 games for Huntsville last season ... BNN released updated preseason predictions on April 1, picking Huntsville to finish 84-78.

RF Jaime Geerdinkck was the hitting star, slashing .381/.500/.524 in 7 games. Top pitching prospect Amayas Moelling, however, was 0-2 with a 4.85 ERA … The Beloit Blue Sox, Huntsville’s AA affiliate, went 3-4 and sits in 4th place in the Donaldo League Mid-Central Division, 4 games behind 7-0 Duluth. 2B José Silva was the offensive star, slashing .333/.385/.833 with a team leading 3 homers and 7 RBIs. On a woeful pitching staff (team ERA of 7.11, 15th in the DNL), closer Dieter Ruijghaver was a bright spot, allowing no runs in 2.1 IP and notching 2 saves … Single A Grand Junction had the best start in the Phantoms’ system, going 4-0 to lead the Provost League West Central Division by a half game over 5-2 Aspen. CF Manuel De Los Santos slashed .429/.529/.500 ... SP Joey Graham impressed with a 4-hit complete game shutout in his first outing of the season, against Tombstone … BNN’s first ranking of BBA minor league systems put Huntsville’s at 6th, with four top 100 prospects.
