Sept. 17, 2038

The Montreal Blazers turned back a last-minute rally to nip the Huntsville Phantoms 4-3 Friday night at the Opera House.

Although it seemed like little more than an insurance run at the time, a solo homer by catcher Dave Robertson in the top of the 9th turned out to be the difference in the ballgame.

Going into the bottom of the inning with closer Chris Adkins on the mound, Montreal held a seemingly insurmountable 4-0 lead. But Adkins yielded a lead-off single to left fielder Fernando Reyes and then walked catcher Luis Barrera.

Blazers fans breathed a little easier when Adkins coaxed a shallow fly-out from second baseman Leyli Yelanian. But they were back on the edges of their seats moments later when Adkins ran the count to 3-1 on center fielder Tim Torres, and then grooved a letter-high fastball. Torres ripped that pitch 363 feet into the left field stands and, suddenly, it was a one-run game.

Montreal skipper Kayne Grandage had seen enough, and brought in setup specialist Alberto Ramírez to finish things off.

The Huntsville Phantoms bounced back from the previous night’s perfect game embarrassment to beat the visiting Montreal Blazers 5-3 at the Opera House.

In what turned out to be the crucial inning of the game, Huntsville pushed 4 runs across the plate in the bottom of the 4th. Second baseman Luis González crushed a double to deep left center to score 2 runs, and then DH David Hall launched a deep drive into the left field stands for a 2-run homer.

That provided the winning margin for starter Yu-bao Tong and the Huntsville bullpen, which bent but didn’t break in nailing down the victory.

Score: Huntsville 5, Montreal 3
WP: Yu-bao Tong PQS: 2
LP: Jermaine Clayton PQS: 1
SV: Esteban Velásquez PQR: 4
Player of the Game: Yu-bao Tong
Cliché of the Game: Luis González told a Huntsville Observer reporter that he was “satisfied” with the win.
