Huntsville Headlines 38.012: Of Streaks, Hot and Cold

The Huntsville Phantoms recently offered up a prime illustration of the ancient Eastern concept of Yin and Yang: all things exist as inseparable and contradictory opposites.

Specifically, let's look at the weeks turned in by young power hitting stud Fernando Reyes and highly regarded catcher Luis Barrera. It’s a tale of streaks sizzling and, as you’ve no doubt guessed, frigid.

First, a look at the …

Reyes, who was already enjoying a terrific season for a pretty horrific Huntsville team, turned in a truly impressive power surge during the past week or so.

From the Phantoms’ last game at Louisville on August 25 to their final game in Montreal on September 1, Reyes mashed 5 homers, knocked in 10 runs, and rapped out 11 hits for a .354 batting average. Throw in a couple walks during those eight games, and you’ve got yourself a .394 OBP, too.

His slash line for the season now reads a very nice .306/.343/.624, with 42 home runs, 107 RBIs, 3.9 WAR and a .391 wOBA.

Don’t touch! Very hot!

If you’re looking to cool down a bit after that, bundle up and take a look at the week turned in by Barrera. It was the very definition of …

While Reyes was busy raking, Barrera was ... not. He went 1 for 28, with his last hit – a single – coming against Hawaii on August 26. Since then, he’s actually cooled off: no hits in his last six games for a positively sub-zero 0-20.

In fairness, Barrera has drawn a few walks since Aug. 25, giving him a wintry .129 OBP over that span. Needless to say, no homers, no RBIs, no runs scored.

Brrrrrrr.

Unfortunately for Barrera, that awful stretch has pulled an already meh season down into the pits. His season slash line: .248/.327/.446, with 20 homers, 62 RBIs, 2.4 WAR and .328 wOBA.

For the Phantoms’ – and Barrera’s – sake, let’s hope he can find a good pair of gloves and some long underwear and thaw out a bit for the rest of the season!

Otherwise, we might need to start calling him Nanook of the North
