37.3. Fiddling On The Edges

After the team's one big splash of the offseason (acquiring Rutledge, for those whom don't click the link), the Phantoms have only done smaller moves since. First, along with Rutledge, the team signed Karou Kouda for 1 year, 850K. In a market pretty much devoid of true SS options, Kouda was - depressingly - one of (if not the) best available. A down year last season likely hurt his market value, but his run of >.700 OPS, >1 WAR seasons in '33-'35 isn't far enough into his past to ignore. He will come in to be Sullivan's backup, but also a bit of an insurance policy against the 26 year old struggling as badly as he did last season.

After, in the Rule 5, the team stole away with 3 young infielders: Guilamo, Rivera and Ayala. Guilamo, a SHB with a +split vs. RHP, will get reps at 2B in spring training in the hopes that he can be a backup for both Guzman and Yelainen. While the other two (both RHBs with skillsets only suited for 3B) will audition for whom will get to be Yelainen's RH platoon-mate. It projects to be a difficult decision because they are very similar players, though the fact that Ayala has at least one POT bump in his history (+1 CON not too long ago) might give him an edge. If the team can manage room on the 27 man, they might try their best to hang onto both, too.

After that, the team plucked Alonso off waivers and signed Lara and Manning to 1 year deals apiece aggregating to 3.2M. Whether it is Reyes, Parrish or Young playing the strong side of the corner OFs, they needed RH platoons. Of course, with 3 names in the running for 2 spots, that - like the RH 3B platoon option above - means one is likely to be left out in the cold. In a perfect world it would be Lara and Manning getting the nod with Alonso riding the pine to develop; however, with a roster crunch looming it may be worth the team to waive Lara and go with Alonso in the role just so they don't lose him (since he's only 23, not yet fully developed and has no service years accrued).
