35.14. Roster Crunch

Post by agrudez » Tue Jun 12, 2018 10:46 am

Entering the back half of Spring Training, the Phantoms still have 30 players on the roster - 15 bats and 15 pitchers - and none are obvious send down candidates as the team endeavors to cut back to the 27 man roster max. Clearly, management would prefer to "snipe" from the pitching pool as 15 pitchers is just... way too many, but most of the better candidates are out of options: House (the team's #7 SP option), Baez (a LOOGY candidate) and Contreras (another LOOGY candidate). Management is confident that all 3 would get taken off waivers as they are all good players - which is something they would obviously like to avoid. Turning attention to the position player depth, the only option is Torres (3 options left) whom, in a perfect world should probably be starting, but management seems interested in him learning the rest of the OF positions - and with playoff aspirations they likely don't want those growing pains in the majors.

So, assuming Torres is one of the ones sent down, we still need at least 2 more players to send packing (I say 'at least' because we are still hunting FA for a RH RF/DH platoon option). One option would be sending back our two remaining Rule 5 picks: McPetrie and Condeixera; however, that would be the same as letting the other players get snapped up on waivers. And, in Condeixera's case, at least, the team actually envisions a real role on the team next year - namely platooning in CF against LHP, pushing Sandcastle to RF and Parrish to the bench.

Another option is sending down Templeman whom lost his spot in the lineup when Sullivan was acquired. This seems like a truly heartless option, considering Templeman has been good for ~2 WAR in back to back seasons now, but with 3 options left and no clear path to playing time for the 27 year old in 2035 it seems a prudent one - unless someone wants to save him from the fate by trading for him. The last option is sending down youngsters on the pitching staff that we had pegged to be contributors right out of the gate in 2035. Namely, this means Cano, Charles and Tong. In Charles' case, though he is fully developed and seems more than ready to take a back of the rotation role for the LH-obsessed Phantoms, this is the 24 year old's last option year. With Cano and Tong, they are well developed, but not fully so - so it might be an easier "sell" to them to head back to the minors. Either way, we expect some hurt feelings, though.

As of this writing, my prediction for whom gets sent down are Torres, Tong and Templeman. If we manage to pick up that RH platoon we are searching for, it would likely be Cano heading down to make room. That at least gets us to opening day, but we still won't be in the clear for 2035 as these guys really shouldn't be down *all* season. At some point, Torres should be replacing either Parrish or Hall, Tong should be replacing Quintana or Charles and Cano should be... he should just be in the majors - even if he has to work through his struggles like last season. And Templeman? Who the heck has a 2 WAR MLer in their AAA? I guess we're rooting for injuries or trades at that point... a crazy way to manage a ball club.

Torres is a nice looking young player!
