In a controversial offseason move, the Bluebirds traded away franchise star 3B Tony Frost to the Vancouver Mounties in hopes of signing newly freed Sluggers 3B Luis Mendoza. The plan backfired as Frost seems to have returned to form not seen since his Silk-winning days and the Bluebirds had a cash fiasco contributing to losing out on the coveted prize of free agency. But at least they were able to acquire a young pitching prospect from Vancouver named Glenn Walker.
The young southpaw can hit triple digits on the radar gun, but lacks great control and his movement needs improvement. However, the young flamethrower has shown his potential down in the Warren Cox League this season. In June, Walker went 3-0 in four starts with a 0.94 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 28.2 innings, including a two-game stretch where he pitched 16 innings with 30 strikeouts while allowing only 4 hits. This was somehow not good enough to be awarded Pitcher of the Month, but Walker is not deterred.
“I’ve just gotta keep doing my thing,” said Walker. “I wanna go out there and give my team the best I have to give every outing, and while I had a good stretch last month, I gotta keep it consistent. My last start caused our team to lose. That isn’t acceptable and I know I am being trusted to put our team in a position to win when I step on the mound.”

Walker has a ceiling of a mid-rotation starter given his lack of command. Worst case scenario will see him in the back of the rotation or in a stopper role out of the bullpen, where his deadly trio of pitches will shut down opposing bats. His 19 HR allowed this season needs to improve, but Bluebirds fans should be excited to have another young arm on the roster in a year or two.
