Loaded with the top rated farm system in the BBA, the Bluebirds don’t have a lot of glaring holes in the future roster, so it was uncertain if they would select a pitcher or catcher. They did both – with one pick. Armed with the #32 pick in the draft, the Bluebirds called juco athlete, Raúl Morales. The outfielder has struggled at the plate this season, but showed plenty of promise the previous two seasons with the Chevrolet Chevys. He won’t stick in CF at the next level, however, and will have his own struggles in the corner outfield spots, but his bat should be good enough in the BBA. If it’s not, perhaps he will make his career on the mound.

That’s right, as good as Morales is at the dish, the Bluebirds believe he has potential to become a pitcher in their organization, as well.

“There aren’t a whole lot of two-way players in the BBA,” said GM Chad Nason. “But we believe Morales can excel as a hitter AND pitcher. We don’t have plans to focus on one or the other. We want to see this kid play both ways.”

Morales may be ready to play in the BBA on day 1, however, he will begin his career in the minors due to a logjam at the top of the Nashville system with several more seasoned youngsters waiting to get their call. Morales projects as a reliever, but if he develops a better changeup, he could be used as a starter. When he isn’t pitching, he can play in the corners, but will probably be a 4th OF at best. The minor league coaches have been instructed to get the most out of Morales as a hitter and pitcher, so whether or not he makes it at the BBA level remains to be seen, but it would be really neat to see a two-way player for the first time since Kidane Ata was seen on the mound early in his Bluebirds career.
