Entering the season, the Bluebirds’ expectations were being in a battle for first place with Yellow Springs Nine. To everyone’s surprise, the Des Moines Kernels are leading the division with the Nine and Nashville sits in sixth place. The pitching staff has improved over the past couple weeks and now ranks 3rd in runs allowed and 2nd in FIP, however the strong bullpen is carrying much of that weight as the starters still get into their grooves. The offense appears to be the biggest problem with a disappointing .705 team OPS, good for 10th in the league and ranking 9th in WAR and wOBA, the latter of which is the new stat all the cool kids rave about. Something needs to change.

Cerrano is a curandero that worked with the Bluebirds in 2045 when the Bluebirds offense was struggling out of the gates. The team finished with 85 wins that season and their OPS jumped 40 points after Cerrano’s visit. As is tradition, Cerrano summoned out the demons with his burning of maple leaves following the Bluebirds’ second straight shutout to the Nine on Monday. In the team’s two games at Louisville Sluggers since, we have seen mixed results with 15 total hits and 2 HR.
Next week’s slate matches up the Bluebirds against the Hawaii Tropics, Long Beach Surfers, and Chicago Black Sox. If the bats don’t wake up against the weaker teams in the Frick League, more drastic approaches may be needed.
