McNeill Celebrates 21st Birthday: Exclusive Interview

Nashville, TN
Most young adults look forward to their 21st birthday. Nashville Bluebirds’ future SS Sammy ‘Bumper’ McNeill was no exception as he celebrated at Whiskey Bent Saloon with some of his teammates, but the budding young star had more to celebrate than his legal drinking age as he received news that he would be invited to spring training with a real shot at making the Opening Day roster. The Bluebirds chose not to re-sign Reynante Alvero after he was unable to repeat his 2046 success, leaving a gaping hole at shortstop. Other candidates for the Opening Day gig are Ian Emery and Allen Schroeder. Emery and Schroeder did not attend McNeill’s festivities, but a couple of other young infielders joined.
“That boy can drink,” said Abay Azzouzj. “For a kid his size he can really throw them back. I don’t think this was his first rodeo,” he continued as fellow teammate, Kevin Mitchell, was found tucked away in the fetal position in a corner of McNeill’s mansion hidden with sunglasses and a drawn hoodie.
SS Sammy 'Bumper' McNeill
McNeill, the 20th selection in the 2046 amateur draft, invited me over to his home for an exclusive interview:
BJ: Thanks for having me over, Sammy. It looks like you boys had a great time last night.
SM: Yeah we threw back a few last night. Definitely one for the books.
*McNeill grabs an opened beer from counter*
BJ: A lot to celebrate – that’s for sure. Turning 21 and receiving an invitation to spring training is a pretty cool gift.
SM: A better gift would’ve been playing in the BBA last year. They shouldn’t be at all surprised to have missed the playoffs when I could’ve helped make a difference. But I don’t think they’ll make that mistake again. We’re gonna turn this ship around.
BJ: You might be onto something, after all, you had a combined 7.5 WAR last season in AA and AAA. You clearly think you’re ready for the BBA, as do many fans. Spring training should be your chance to prove yourself.
SM: I’ll ball out this spring, no doubt. Whether or not I’ll be on the Opening Day roster is up to management, but expect a grievance if I’m in the minors for the first couple week so they can try and control me for another season. Excuse me for a sec.
*McNeill heads towards bathroom and exits a few seconds later*
*McNeill cracks open new beer*
BJ: I heard you sniffling in there. I hope you’re not coming down with a cold before spring training. It’s probably just allergies. I have pretty bad allergies in the spring, too
SM: Yeah I was just in there taking some Claritin.
*Mitchell yells from corner*
KM: Why do you think we call him Bumper?
BJ: Uh, well, back to the topic of making the roster this season. The Bluebirds seem to have a pretty complete roster after adding Ronnie Hubbard. The last remaining piece appears to be shortstop, so I like your chances.
SM: I like my chances, too. Even if they wait to call me up I’m gonna come in there and do what I do best. I know I can help this team and I’m excited to lead them to the playoffs.
*cracks open another beer*
BJ: Wow, the party never seems to end for you.
SM: It’s just a normality for me at this point. I’ve always had a lot of pressure on me as a kid. I was always in the spotlight thanks to my parents so it often drove me to put on a show. Used to be a couple beers would get me to entertain, but now it’s like water.
BJ: I imagine living under the shadow of your dad and mom can be stressful, but I hope alcohol isn’t the answ…
*unknown female voice is heard*
??: Babe, who is that?
*woman walks down stairs putting while covering herself with silk robe*
??: It better not be your dad and that fucking bitch!
SM: Sorry I gotta go. I’ll see you in spring training. The door is right over there.
*McNeill hurries me out the door*
BJ: Is that…was that who I thought it was?
SM: See ya soon buddy.

Yikes.
Suspensions are 'on', by the way.
