Bluebirds Land Hubbard

The Nashville Bluebirds were left with a gaping hole in center field when they traded away Kidane Ata in 2046, which wasn’t a problem when the team was in shambles in the midst of a rebuild. Nashville was quick to rebound, however, and was in contention for the playoffs on the final day of the 2047 season. With the trade market fairly dried up, the Bluebirds ended up trading for Long Beach Surfers starting CF Jorge Lopez, whose glove wasn’t as good as incumbent CF, Reed Graham, but had the ability to hit above the Mendoza line. Lopez’s .690 OPS with the Bluebirds was an improvement, but not the permanent solution to the center field woes.
“We brought in Lopez as a band-aid, but we never intended him on being a major piece to turn around this club,” said GM Chad Nason. “I’m a big game hunter and I had my sights on a bigger name, but he must have been hibernating because I wasn’t able to bag him. But now…”
The Bluebirds acquired four-time All-Star CF Ronnie Hubbard from the Twin Cities River Monsters in exchange for LF Bastião Fardos, who had a lackluster season after signing a $55M deal prior to the 2047 season, and pitching prospect Jesus Diaz.
Hubbard was infamously awarded a 6 year $144M contract before the 2045 season as part of the Twin Cities blow up, but the following three seasons will pay Hubbard $36.5M each. The River Monsters will continue paying half of his remaining salary as part of the deal. The 29 year old Hubbard is coming off another All-Star season and his second Yogi Zimmer Diamon Glove award.
“I think I’m the missing piece to get Nashville over the top,” said Hubbard. “They’re a good team already, but now I think we’re a complete team. I can’t wait to get into Spring Training and meet some of the younger players I haven’t had a chance to meet yet. There is some young talent here that I hope I can help mold.”

The move frees up a corner outfield spot for one of Nashville’s many young outfielders. Pedro Mendoza and Matt Garrison were set to battle for playing time at DH with Fardos being the superior fielder, but now Mendoza will likely be playing the field while Garrison serves as DH.
