2047 Recap

The Nashville Bluebirds have once again not been invited to the postseason and have filed a grievance with the BBA citing discrimination against blue colored birds. The case is expected to be thrown out immediately, but it’s the best effort Nashville has put forward to making it into the playoffs since the team accidentally made it to the postseason in 2041. Before then, they hadn’t made single appearance since 2025. Let’s recap the tease of the 2047 season that saw the Bluebirds eliminated on the final day of the season.

Pitching

A couple of ill-timed injuries cost the Bluebirds greatly. The always consistent Chris ‘The Wolf’ Moran was injured in his first start of the season, forcing Nashville to scramble to replace the 2046 Frick League leader in quality starts. His presence was missed for 6 weeks, but luckily Dan Forsyth picked up the slack with a 3.09 ERA in until the end of May. Forsyth imploded upon The Wolf’s return and finished the season with a 4.70 ERA and is unlikely to have his $3.9M team option picked up next season. Nobuhito Kan was coming off an impressive 2046 campaign in Orlando and was voted Pitcher of the Year. Kan pitched well enough in Spring Training to earn a spot in the rotation, but he floundered early on and was sent to the bullpen where he pitched much better in relief. Southpaw Scott Bugbie went down with an elbow strain in early July and missed the rest of the season and was sorely missed down the stretch, but luckily rookie Adrian Custello dazzled to the tune of a 3.11 ERA and 139 K’s in 159.1 IP resulting in an 11-4 record. Bluebirds ace, Barney Lindsay, proved again to be one of the top pitchers in the Frick League. Stoppers Martin Román and Juan Cerda underwhelmed but were not terrible. The stars of the bullpen were Mitchell Purssell and Miguel Angel 'Swami' Garza. The team led the league in strikeouts, but there is room for improvement in 2048 if the rotation stays intact and the bullpen pitches to the best of their abilities.

Infield

3B Tony Frost had his best season since 2044 and was selected as an all-star. Frost led all Frick League hitters at the hot corner in nearly every offensive stat by a large margin and proved to earn his mega extension that will pay him $21M next season. SS Reynante Alvero regressed terribly after a 2.5 WAR season on 2046. Alvero was worse than a replacement level player in 2047, but did enough defensively to keep the spot warm for Sammy ‘Bumper’ McNeill in 2048. 2B Marvin Isworth came over with his hefty contract in the offseason and also had his best season since 2044. Odemar Lock in underrated at 1B with his combination of in base skills and power as he sported a 2.4 WAR season. Bluebirds fans would love to see this type of production from him moving forward. Team captain, Alberto Rodríguez, had a bounce back season behind the plate, but still hasn’t regained the power he’s seen in previous seasons before 2046. Edgardo Diaz was a fantastic role player and did his part dismantling LHP with a .957 OPS in limited at bats.

Outfield

Pedro Mendoza finally busted out this season with a .281/.372/.556 slash line, which was good enough for 4.1 WAR as he split time in RF and DH. Bastião Fardos was a huge disappointment after signing a five year deal in the offseason. His .739 OPS was not worth the $15M paycheck so Nashville brass is expecting a big bounce back season in 2048. Centerfield was a source of frustration since trading away Kidane Ata. Reed Graham was completely lost at the plate so the Bluebirds were forced to acquire Jorge Lopez from the Long Beach Surfers at the trade deadline, but he didn’t far much better. The real stars were the rookies, Martin Hemming and Matt Garrison. The latter got off to a torrid start before hitting the slump of all slumps and being demoted to AAA. Hemming, however, appears to be a future perennial all-star after posting an 1.121 OPS in 45 games.

Outlook

There don’t seem to be many glaring holes heading into the 2048 offseason. The infield should be complete with McNeill coming in to play shortstop for the pending free agent, Alvero. Centerfield is the glaring hole and it is uncertain how it will be addressed. They will be looking to re-sign or replace Diaz as a RHP killer, but otherwise have a set lineup. Adding a veteran starting pitcher might be in the cards, but the pitching staff should be pretty solid.

Really missing Ata right about now. Once I fill that void I will be satisfied.
