Bluebirds AA affiliate, High Point Hammers, have been quite impressive this season boasting a record of 78-55 which puts them in the wildcard lead. The past three games have been a small example of the offense’s firepower with a combined 56 runs over that span, highlighted by a 30 run performance in Thursday’s matchup versus Kamloops Moops.
The Hammers were trailing 6-2 after five innings before inching one run closer in the sixth inning. That is when Kamloops started playing by Little League rules; thinking the game was over and playing actual Little Leaguers. The seventh inning began normal – a leadoff single by Mark Bradford and a sacrifice bunt moving him to second base. An RBI single by Jin-hwan Kim narrowed the Moops’ lead to two. Kim’s good baserunning helped him avoid a double play as the Moops were forced to take the easy out at first on a John Begin groundball. Then the wheels fell off for Kamloops as High Point went on an epic two-out rally, scoring 22 runs, highlighted by a Begin grand slam.
The Hammers tacked on five additional runs in the ninth to secure the W and every batter had a hit in the game with four players tallying at least 5 RBI. The Hammers hit for eight doubles, two triples, and three homers.
