With many active roster spots available, it was no surprise the Nashville Bluebirds were active during the Rule V BBA draft. The bullpen was certainly a concern, but the team hopes José Velasco will help fill a long reliever role. The team first noticed Velasco’s potential when he finished the season in AA without allowing a run since June 7. The righty was nearly unhittable and the Bluebirds didn’t hesitate to choose him when the Jacksonville Hurricanes chose not to protect the young hurler.
“I’m very grateful for the opportunity here in Nashville,” said Velasco. “I told the manager I am working hard every day to improve as a pitcher. As soon as I got into Nashville I met with our pitching coach and I’ve already seen an improvement in my stuff. I was disappointed when I was demoted from AAA to AA last season, but that set a fire in me and I’ve been on a mission to prove myself ever since.”

Nashville still has some uncertainties in the bullpen, and while Velasco looks like a promising pitcher, myriad question marks remain outside of stoppers Lorenzo de’ Medici and Martin Román.
