A Flock of Bluebirds 2042.18- Nashville Comes Up One Game Short
October 1, 2042

"Fucking Des Moines," Nashville Bluebirds GM Matt Rectenwald said. "Way to put up a fight." The Nashville Bluebirds entered the last three games of the season in a dead heat with the Chicago Black Sox. Facing the Louisville Sluggers, Nashville's stated goal was to win two out of three, which they did. "We figured Des Moines could find a way to win just one game, which would then set up a Game 163 against Chicago to decide the Frick League's final Wild Card spot. Instead, they just fell on their face and we missed the playoffs by one game. Heartbreaking," said Rectenwald.

Nacho Mendez started in both of the Bluebirds' wins against Chicago, taking on a starring role. In Game 160, he was 3-4 with two homers, 3 runs scored, 3 runs batted in and a walk. After sitting out Game 161, he went 2-4 with a triple, 1 run scored and 2 RBI in Game 162. "We gave it everything we had," said Mendez. "It just wasn't quite enough."

The turning point of the season was the seventh inning of Game 161. With Nashville trailing 5-3, Freddy Delgado entered the game for Nashville looking to keep the Bluebirds in the ballgame. The opposite happened:

Nobody was more surprised by Des Moines than Chicago ... and possibly Des Moines.
