Orozco Implodes, Bullpen Realignment To Come

A month ago he was the Nashville Bluebirds lone All-Star after a fantastic return to the pitching mound, but now Manuel Orozco is searching for answers.

In five August appearances, he has a 12.60 ERA and has blown four save opportunities, bringing his season total to seven blown saves in 21 opportunities.

"Manuel's going through a rough stretch right now, there's no denying it," said Nashville pitching coach Mike Ellison. "Skip, Recte and myself will sit down and try to figure out a plan going forward."

A team source who did not wish to be named indicated that there is some level of concern about the workload of Orozco, particularly with his injury history.

The source went on to say that it was likely Orozco will see a role change, moving from closer to middle relief. Lorenzo de' Medici seems likely to take over the closers role, with rookie star Ash Davenport moving into the setup role.

The upcoming schedule allows Nashville to work with a four-man rotation for the next week, and that means Ta-heng Hor will move into a "stopper" role out of the pen.

Nashville also announced that they have placed reliever Alfredo Perales on waivers and designated him for assignment. Perales made his way back to the big leagues after previously being outrighted to AAA Orlando, but failed to capitalize on his second chance (17.18 ERA in 3 appearances). To take his place on the active roster, the Bluebirds activated Hyun-sik Chang from his rehab assignment. Chang will pitch out of the bullpen.
