A Flock Of Bluebirds 2041.3- We Got Wood! (Sorry Portland)
We Got Wood! (Sorry Portland)
January 1, 2041
Going into the 2040-41 offseason, Nashville allowed Abdelwahab Kamade to explore free agency instead of executing his player option with the hopes that he could be brought back at a lesser salary. Early negotiations between the two parties were to no avail as an unnamed team source said the two sides were "millions" apart.
The knowledge of what it would actually take to bring back Kamade led the front office to pivot their attention to the rest of the available free agent center fielders. Surveying the market, the Bluebirds brass saw one player who would not only be the best fit to pair with Kidane Ata, but would add much needed power to the lineup. That player was William Wood.
Wood agreed to join the Bluebirds just after the clock struck midnight in Nashville. It's a six year deal worth $12 million a year, with a Player Opt-Out available after 2043 and 2046 being a Player Option.
Wood was the #1 overall pick by Edmonton in 2033 and made the bigs in 2036, winning the Zimmer Award in left field his rookie year. He won a Landis ring with the Jackrabbits in 2038.
After hitting 24 homers in his rookie year, Wood has increased his home run total by one every year (31, 32, 33, 34). He's stolen at least 23 bases in each of his five seasons, and has driven in an average of 94 runs.
Consistency, plate discipline and luck are the three main factors that will move Wood from good to great. His plate discipline is always going to include a lot of strikeouts, but if he can draw a few more walks that will go a long way. The biggest factor in his fluctuations appears to be luck. In 2037 and 2039 his batting average spiked to .276 and .298. BABIP is the main factor.
As for playing center field, it's a position Wood can play decently enough. He truly excels in left field but will be a good enough center fielder (at least for now) to make the lions share of starts there.
Wood also adds leadership to the young Bluebirds squad, and fan response to the signing has been generally positive.

Had my eye on both Wood and Gasoline this offseason. I just couldn’t pull the trigger on either guy. I like Wood’s combination of power and solid D.

I had a substantial offer a few years shorter. Couldn't go 6 cause Wood won't be a cf that long and my corners are going to be around a while.

I admit I worry about long term deals for CF, but Wood can move over if need be.

The problem with two-way players is that you need two guy who can play the position he fills.

I was interested in Wood, too, although as a left fielder. I pulled my punches on the offer, though, because his injury history and "eye" rating concerned me a little. In retrospect, wish I'd been more aggressive. I like the signing for Nashville - not so much for Chicago and the rest of the division.
