Nashville Reaches Agreement with McQuade

Once considered one of the top young shortstops in the game, J.J. McQuade is viewed quite differently going into the 2041 season. McQuade showed massive promise in his first six years in the league after coming in as a 20 year old rookie with Yellow Springs in 2029. Following the 2034 season he elected free agency at the age of 26. Scouts certainly assumed that he would be going into his prime years, as did the Boise Spuds. Boise signed him to a huge deal of just over $84 million for six years to be their main gate attraction in their first year of existence. McQuade was having his best season in a while when on June 9, 2035 the Spuds shipped him to Long Beach.

With the Surfers, McQuade posted a .703 OPS. His .738 combined OPS for the 2035 season would be the last time the once ballyhooed prospect would break the .700 OPS threshold.

McQuade has played for three different teams since, most recently Brooklyn, and while his bat has almost completely disappeared, his defense has remained steady.

When the 2040 season ended, so did McQuade's contract. He would now enter free agency for the second time. This time around, McQuade could only be hopeful to get a reasonable major league deal.

Meanwhile in Nashville, the Bluebirds had lost another once promising player in Antonio Cruz to free agency. Cruz was valuable mostly for his bat against left-handed pitchers as well as his infield defense and versatility. However, Cruz was adamant that he was a starting caliber player and wasn't willing to discuss an extension with the Bluebirds under any circumstances.

With an eye towards replacing Cruz, and perhaps increasing fan interest as well, the Bluebirds targeted McQuade and were able to come to an agreement quite quickly. He will receive $2.9 million for 2041, and Nashville holds a team option for 2042 at just $2.0 million.

The big question remaining is whether McQuade can accept being just a part-time player at this point of his career. He's an ideal platoon partner for starting shortstop Francisco Otero and it will be up to manager Daniel Labrie, Jr. to make sure that the fan favorite McQuade remains content.

For obvious reasons, I've always enjoyed watching JJ move through his career.

He's the perfect vsLHP platoon guy now, assuming he can swallow his pride.
