The Goat Rope 2039.2

Post by GoldenOne » Thu Jul 04, 2019 3:36 pm

The Nashville Goats are predicted to finish worse this season than last. The predictions are showing a win total in the mid-60s? Could this be? What went wrong last year? Why does everyone think this year will be so bad? Well, let's take a look.

2038 Season
Yes, the Goats should have done better. Yes, you can point to trading away guys like Pedro Gómez (who was having a career year), or Cisco Arreola (who the Goats only got at the end of June), or Miguel Suárez (who couldnt really hit lefties nor play 1st base). But when your owner is demanding you improve your bullpen ERA (which was last in the JL last season), we might just want to take a look at the bullpen. There was a total of 25 guys making their way through the pitching staff last season. 25! Yes, some were injuries but a lot were ineffectiveness. Two guys, Eru Likiliki and Heinrich Peithner, both had WARs of 3.7 and 3.6 respectively. Thirteen of the other 23 pitchers had a WAR of 0.0 or lower. Only one other had a WAR of over 1.0, León Ramírez at 1.2. So yeah, I'm going to blame the pitching staff.

2039 Season
So, let's see what's happening this season. After 3 weeks into the season, the Goats are 10-9 and right in the mix of things. The pitching staff has done a complete turnaround and is in the top 5 in most categories in the JL. They arent striking a lot out and are giving up a lot of walks, but that's how this staff has been built. The Goats plan on keeping the ball in the park and letting their defense do some work, well, its working, mostly. The offense is starting to come around after a slow start to the season. The outfield of Justin Jackson, Abdelwahab Kamade , and Kidane Ata is one that most teams would covet. With Sam Wade, Tu-fu Yong, and Manuel Martínez returning the the infield we add in a nice mix of defense, speed, and just enough OBP and power to help out. While Ares Papadias is no Arreola, neither is his contract; but the defense is improved there as well.

The lone Free Agent addition to the staff was George Lee 'Sparky' Anderson V . While he's not the power threat Suarez was, he'll get on base a whole lot more. He's also got some speed and a whole lot of smarts on the base paths.

And oh yeah, there is a whole lot more (decent/good enough) depth down in the AAA pitching staff this season. I wouldnt necessarily count the Goats out this season. I'm not sure they'll be challenging Jacksonville but hey, there is a good chance Jacksonville gets brought back to the fold by some other pretty good teams in the division and league this season. So, for now at least, Managers may be setting up their rotations with the thought of "Hey, its Nashville, put the scrubs in and give the regulars a day off." That might not be the smartest thing to do and before the rest of the league realizes that, it may be too late.
