Halifax Chronicle Herald - Batting Report

Post by jcrmoon42 » Mon Jul 03, 2017 11:17 pm

While the Halifax Hawks were a disaster on the pitching mound this season, the offense was actually pretty respectable. Let's take a look at some of the high points.

C Luis Miguel Carrillo - Carrillo came to the Hawks in the controversial trade that sent SP Hardrock Hall to Vancouver last year. While they certainly could have used Hall on the mound, Carrillo was a revelation. He made the All Star team, slugged 38 homers, and led the club with a .947 OPS, sending 2029 All Star Jacky Voorneveld begrudgingly to the minors.

CF Antonio Ortiz - Second year center fielder Antonio Ortiz put up a .414 OBP to go with 17 homers and 30 steals. He was also second on the team with a 3.5 WAR, playing excellent defense, even though he spent a good part of the season in AAA.

RF Legacy Wyatt - One of Australia's best, Wyatt had an excellent season but wasn't able to live up to the lofty heights he set for himself last year. He missed several weeks of the season with injuries but still put up 35 homers and 28 steals in only 127 games.

3B Bucky Dornster - Another youngster who spent part of the season in the minors, not much was expected of Dornster going in to the season, but he ended up hitting .310 on the season with an .832 OPS while playing excellent D at the hot corner.

1B Stelio Kontos - Perhaps the biggest name on the team, and certainly the most targeted in trade inquiries, Kontos played 154 games at first this year, but his defense makes him best off as a DH. Even with 42 homers and 110 RBI, Kontos took a big step back as a hitter this year. He struck out 39 more times than he ever had and batted 19 points below his career average.

Carillo's a neat player. You wonder if he can repeat that BA over and over.
