Hawks Nest, v28.1 - Hack Sturdivant

Post by trmmilwwi » Tue Oct 18, 2016 7:09 am

The Halifax Hawks are having another rough season. Team morale is in the shitter and the pitching woes continue. Fans have been looking for bright spots where they can and hope for any reason to come out to the ballpark. One such reason to show up to watch the game sis the play of young rightfielder Mark “Hack” Sturdivant.

Hack is a 6’-5”, 200 pound 23 year old outfielder from Thousand Oaks, California. He was a highly touted can’t miss prospect coming out of high school and was drafted 11th overall by Halifax in the 2023 draft as a 17 year old senior. He received some playing time in the World league that offseason and reported to rookie league Shreveport the next spring. Over the following 2 seasons he quickly worked his way up through the minors and had a cup of coffee during the tail end of the 2026 season as a 20 year old kid. He showed enough during the offseason that the Hawks placed him into the everyday lineup as a 21 year old rookie last season. Hack had a decent campaign as he managed to hit .245 with 8 homers and 45 RBI’s. He carried a 0.6 WAR on the season and fared well in the field where he carried a +3.6 ZR and a 1.019 EFF.

The Hawks penciled him in as their starting right fielder for the 2028 season. When Halifax acquired OF JJ Abrams during the offseason there were some who thought that Sturdivant would be the odd man out. However, Hack hit .342 during the spring and earned the starting position in right. On the season he has hit .290 with 22 homers and 83 RBI’s. His defense has been steady and he has increased his range, maybe at the expense of ZR and EFF. Maybe even more important is that Sturdivant is just happy to have a place on the team. The rest of the clubhouse has been a circus this season but Hack quietly goes about his business and prepares for every game.

At 23 years old the young RF will be with Halifax for a few years to come.

He's a good piece to build around. Especially since there seems to be a trend with winning teams to load up on left handed pitching. This guy can be the equalizer.
