Two Trades May Bolster Hawks
Underwhelming Deals Offer Some Help

The Hawks continue to play above expectations. Louisville came to town, and the Hawks executed another four-game sweep of the Sluggers. Halifax swept four at Louisville earlier in May. With all the other teams in the division slumping, the Hawks now sport a twelve game lead, the largest divisional lead in the MBWBA. In the final of that recent series at home Pedro Torrez looked to be set to notch his fourth complete-game shutout of the season. Instead, Tommy Gardner came on for the ninth to earn his 12th save while preserving the shutout.
The Hawks front office negotiated two trades that, while certainly not earth-shaking or even exciting, may help the club in their drive for the playoffs:
- In the first deal Halifax sent AAA reliever Robert Hansen and rookie league outfielder Dennis Holley to Louisville in exchange for relief pitcher Jesus Hopkins. Hopkins will probably take a set-up job in the bullpen. Temporarily at least, José Perucho has been optioned to Montgomery to make room on the roster for Hopkins.
- In the second trade infielder Mario García comes over from Greenville in exchange for former number one draft pick Eugene Rodgers. García will bat leadoff and take over the shortstop job from a severely slumping Vicente Trevino. Trevino, in turn, will become the utility infielder he is more suited to be, replacing EBA import Lúcio Gutiérrez who has been designated for assignment.
