So the first ten days of the season were good. The next ten were OK. The next ten were bad. Based on that progression, Hawk fans feared a disastrous ten days might be in store. Ah, relax, Hawksters. After losing the final game of a series with Carolina at Nova Scotia Ballpark, the Hawks headed to Louisville for four games with the division foe Sluggers. It all went well as our local boys stormed in and swept the series. Then it was back home again for a crucial three game series with another divisional foe, the Brooklyn Robins. The Hawks outscored the Robins 16-8 to sweep that series and extend the winning streak to seven games. Alas, lowly Valencia came to town and beat our boys in the first two games of a four-game set due to resume tonight.
- Over the past ten games Edgar Jones had 5 home runs and 9 runs batted in. He leads the Johnson League in both of those offensive departments. Bo who?
- Pedro Torrez (3-1, 2.82) recorded his second shutout of the season with a three-hit job vs. Louisville in which he fanned 8 while walking just 1.
- Daniel Jordan made his major league debut replacing the injured Alberto López in the rotation. He was shaky in his first go in that loss to Carolina but really shined against Brooklyn. In eight innings against the Robins he allowed five hits, a single run while striking out 6 and walking 2. Tommy Gardner got the win when the Hawks rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth in a 3-2 thriller. Struggling Vicente Trevino had a walk off base on balls with the bases loaded and one out to win it for Gardner.
- Wilton Sanders and Keith Young continue to battle for the hot corner job. Neither is hitting for average yet, but Young could win the job based on power. He has 4 doubles, a triple, and 5 home runs among his 16 hits to date.
- After winning his first two starts, Martin Lewis has dropped four decisions. It’s not like he is pitching badly: he has a 3.75 ERA, but he could sure use some more run support.
- Elroy Hinson and Bo Jordan continue to trundle on in the mid .200’s. It is only a matter of time before they both break out with the offense we are more accustomed to. Jordan needs 16 hits to reach the 2,000 mark.
- Oddly, the triple-A Montgomery Admirals are three games back of that other Halifax team, the AAA Fighting Scots of the Omaha organization..
