The Hawks opened the season in Madison where the much ballyhooed Alberto Salazar would be making his MBBA debut. He had three hits in the three game series, all singles. He looked nervous. The Hawks won the opener behind a strong seven inning performance by Sancho Delgado and a five-run fourth inning that included a three-run homer by Edgar Jones. Madison won game two in eleven innings, thus negating third baseman Keith Young’s two-run homer in his first at-bat back in the MBBA. Jesús Gonzáles took the loss. In the final game Halifax took the series with a 7-4 win highlighted by bunches of doubles and four RBIs by number ten hitter Vicente Trevino. New guy Martin Lewis earned the W.

Then it was on to Omaha for four games with the Barnstormers who most people pick to be best in the MBWBA. Alberto López went the distance in the opener to win behind two Edgar Jones’s home runs, one of which was a grand slam. Game two was all Pedro Torrez, who pitched a five-hit shutout and cruised to a 6-0 victory. Jones had another home run and Cisco Guerrero had three hits and three RBIs. Omaha took game three as the Hawks could manage just five hits and Sancho Delgado could only last three innings. Omaha would have liked to even the series in the finale, but failed after tyiong the score in the bottom of the eighth when Vicente Trevino doubled in Ben McLaughlin in the top of the ninth. Tommy Gardner walked one in the bottom of the ninth, but got the save with two ground balls and a short fly to right.

Then it was home with three with last year’s MBWBA champions, the California Crusaders who are rumored to be considering a move to Mexico City. Martin Lewis threw a four-hit shutout in the opener for his second win. Bo Jordan and Gilberto Pacheco had home runs. Game two was close, 6-5, but the Hawks prevailed behind five pitchers and two hits each from Elroy Hinson and Wilton Sanders. The sweep came in another close one, 4-3 in twelve innings. The Crusaders managed to get six hits over the final three innings without scoring a run. Edgar Jones drove in Gilberto Pacheco with a walk off single.

Highlights:

8-2 Start. two game division lead
Martin Lewis won both starts including a shutout.
Alberto López also won his first two starts.
Edgar Jones had five home runs and was named JL Star of the Week.

Next up is a four game series on the opposite coast at Vancouver followed by three at home with divisional rival Greenville. Lots of travel!
