The Halifax Team Awards are voted upon by the Nova Scotia media – radio, television, newspaper, and blog. Here are the results of the MVP vote:
Catcher Elroy Hinson
Unquestionably catcher Elroy Hinson is the team’s Most Valuable Player for 2024. He started 143 games behind the plate, but it was on the offense that he contributed the most. Elroy hit .311, swatted 16 home runs, and knocked in 87. His WAR was 5.6, best on the team among position players. Elroy came to Halifax from the other Canadian coast team, the Vancouver Mounties, in a deal that saw Pancho Torres, Jesús Durán, Haku A'amakualenalena, and Lightnin Hopkins also come west to east. Going the other way were Diego Moreno, Phil Chapman, Eana Ginori, Eddie Yates, and Ryan Craigie. Amazingly, Torres, Duran, A'amakualenalena, and Hopkins are all still with the Halifax organization, but clearly Hinson was the plum of the trade. Moreno is still a star, now with Birmingham. Chapman hit .343 with Birmingham this year too. Ginori is now a marginal player with Carolina. Craigie had a solid year in the pen with Indy but is now out for Tommy John surgery and will not be seen until at least mid-2025. Only Yates is still with the Mounties.
Meanwhile, Hinson is eligible for his second year of arbitration as we write this article. It is expected that he will reel in close to $7.0 million for next year. Oddly, Hinson did not win the Johnson League Puckett Golden Bat for Catchers. That honor went to Omaha’s Bob Burke. While he undoubtedly had a great season, we feel the award should have gone to Hinson.
