With an open spot in the rotation, a battle ensued in spring. Among the contenders was Javier ‘Pops’ Basanta, a highly-touted prospect acquired from Vancouver in ’57. Pops pitched phenomenally, allowing 0 ER in 11 IP, however, was sent to AA to continue honing his skills. It didn’t seem he needed much more work, and that showed given his 1.77 ERA in 45.2 IP this season. So he was promoted to AAA.
Basanta threw a complete game in his first AAA start, throwing just 105 pitches. His next start was superb, as well. 7 shutout innings, but the last out hurt…a lot. After finishing the frame in the 7th inning, Basanta went straight to the trainer’s room. The diagnosis – torn rotator cuff. A death sentence for some pitchers, but Pops is still young and hopes to recover over the next year.

“I don’t know what to say except I’m bummed,” said Basanta. “I was pitching better than I’ve ever pitched before and was ready for my shot in Nashville. It was like it was right there in front of me and taken away from me. I know I have a long road to recovery, but I’ll do everything I can to be back on the mound for Opening Day.”
With a 13-14 month window for recovery, it doesn’t seem likely that Basanta will be ready for Opening Day, however, he may be a nice addition towards the end of the season after he’s had some time rehabilitating in the minors.
