Román Traded for Prospects

After another underperforming season, the Nashville Bluebirds sent reliever, Martin Román, to the Valencia Stars in exchange for a pair of pitching prospects. Román was used as a stopper out of the Bluebirds’ bullpen for a couple seasons, but never lived up to expectations. In six seasons in Nashville he posted a 3.29 ERA in 476.1 IP. Román was awarded $3.4 million in his final year of arbitration. While that is a great value for a pitcher of his caliber, Nashville’s front office believed they could spend that money elsewhere and help accommodate Dennis French and his unexpected salary.
In exchange, the Stars sent RHPs Manuel García and Franklin Badger. García has impressed Bluebirds scouts already and received an invite to spring training with a legitimate shot at breaking into the rotation as the club’s fifth starter. He is a well-rounded pitcher with five solid pitches in his repertoire, none of which are plus plus. Badger is a former 3rd round draft pick and the 22 year old is already well developed. He has a strong fastball/slider combo with an average knuckle curve and a changeup that needs a lot of work. Although he could be a valuable pitcher on some teams, he will likely spend the season in AAA this season.
