Bobby Beat 2001 v3: Bobs' Draft Recap: Top 5 Picks

Post by jiminyhopkins » Fri Jul 08, 2011 3:06 am

Washington, DC--

The 2001 MBBA Draft went relatively well for the Bobwhites. In addition to picking up a few decent bats, the club also netted a possible All Star closer (though not the one we wanted, thanks alot Nick Spitulski!)

First Round, 6th Overall: CL Chad Jordan
Jordan is a tremendously talented reliever, regarded by nearly all scouting authorities as a future star closer in the MBBA. Jordan was, however, not the first closer taken, as the Louisville Sluggers took Nathan Campbell at 3rd overall. But getting back to Jordan, who is 2 years younger and throws just as hard, the 'Whites see a bright future. Even with current closer James Endres among the league leaders in saves, the club is thrilled to have Jordan rising through the ranks in the coming years, pushing Endres and possibly turning him into a trade commodity.

First Round Supplemental, 27th Overall: 1B Warren Johnson
It wont be long before Johnson is launching extra base hits in the MBBA, but the question is for which team? Current 1B Neil McKinney, who must be mentioned at least once in every Washington news release, is in the first season of a 6 year contract and doesn't look to go anywhere. All the same, Johnson's hitting skills cant be denied, and there are rumblings that the Bobs may try to turn him into a left fielder. His natural leadership skills make him more valuable than merely a power bat.

Second Round, 37th Overall: LF Allen Stephens
Speaking of left fielders, the Bobwhites draft a promising one in Stephens. The L.A. native projects to have the typical power skills expected of a corner outfielder, scoring 8's in contact, power, and K avoidance. Holding him back, however, is the fact that he is slower than a snake full of buckshot. He'd be a great DH if this league had one. Even so, Stephens should grade out as a average defender with a decent arm.

Second Round, 41st Overall: 1B Augusto Herrera
The Bobwhites' draft creedo must go something like this: When in doubt, go for power. And thats what they did by drafting yet another first baseman. Hererra is a problematic fielder, but he actually has good speed for a 1B. How well he does beyond AAA is anyone's guess, but chicks dig the longball, so yaneverknow.

Fourth Round, 63rd Overall: 3B Santiago Trevino
For a guy with high intelligence and low greed, the club was surprised that he rejected a signing bonus offer nearly twice the recommended slot value. The greedy bastard. Washington looks forward to getting a replacement pick next season.

In other news, Washington is currently in second place in the leagues' weakest division, five games under .500 and still with a boatload of injuries. And the owner is still ANGRY.

Good times!!!

I had my eye on Stephens but your grabbed him before I could. Despite his limitations his offense projection is exciting.
