On July 9, 2063, a cheer erupted on the streets of Louisville. Well, actually it was just at the Church of Religious Consciousness. The team traded for a player that could one day pilot the team to glory, as long as he doesn't have fish for dinner. That player, of course, is Clarence 'The Captain' Oveur.
Drafted at the end of the first round in 2062 by Las Vegas, Oveur was coveted at the time by the Sluggers, who were hoping he would drop to the start of the second round. "We had him fairly high on the draft board and really was excited at the prospect of getting him in the second round," recalled GM BP. "Some of us were even suggesting we shock everyone and pick him first overall. We were really impressed when we visited him. He seemed mature for his age and he even took us up in an airplane he was learning to fly. The only knock was his obsession with that really old movie Gladiator, but it didn't seem to affect his pitching. We did give up some really good pitching prospects for him, but we had to have him."
Oveur, who is currently the #93 prospect in the BBA, has pitched well and seems on track for a likely jump to Single A Ocala next season. He is already a leader at age 19, though his young age is not helping with his poor stamina. The team is expecting him to someday be in the starting rotation, so chances are he will be put through more extensive training to increase his stamina. In order to train, one has to be healthy of course, and Oveur did unfortunately suffer his first significant injuries after the trade. Those injuries and relatively poor performance after the trade did impact his mood, but the team is hoping a change of scene to Ocala will help.
"I actually wasn't that happy to get traded," admitted Oveur. "No one on my new team in Caracas had been to a Turkish prison. And those injuries were tough. I just wasn't at my best. But hopefully next season will be more fun in Ocala."
"Even though we gave up Josh Sang, Titus Kantsantonis, and Juan Alonzo, we did get Bret Harrell who could come in handy next season, and Ricardo Hernandez who could be playing in Louisville in just a couple of years," noted GM BP. "I would do this trade again in a heartbeat, despite what the pundits say."
