WTF? Times Vol. 6, Iss. 1: Everybody Hates Louisville
Wow, hard to believe we're, um, "gearing" up for our 6th year of covering this sorry team that ownership seems to care about only intermittently and that everyone apparently hates as a result. Well, at least they hate the ownership. How else to explain that wunderphenom Pablo Romero decided to sign with the Phoenix Talons after Louisville reportedly threw more money (and more, and even more) at him? When this reporter has a chance to ask Romero what the deal was, he fully expects to hear him say "I hate Louisville".
Jake Kestle sure does. After being offered a fairly lucrative contract back in January, management immediately rescinded the offer, saying they were initially unaware of his injury issues. "That's just a load of s***," said Kestle after learning of the withdrawn offer. "I hope no one signs with those f*****s."
Well, here it is, March 1, and that's basically been the case. Allen Izatt did sign with the club, to be sure, but at a tremendously inflated price for someone who could walk 150 batters. Even so, it has to make management feel good that they didn't have to give Brad Browne a nickel for the guy, although they're giving the guy about a billion nickels. Some Triple-A filler signed, so that, after spring training, there will actually be enough players to fill out Missouri's team (!), but that's been about it and that looks to be about it.
However, dear readers, lest you think that hatred for the Sluggers exists only in the realm of free agency and among you, the slighted fans, look no further than setup man/sometime closer Nathan Campbell's reaction to everything: "F*** this...I'm not even trying anymore. I'm gonna throw the ball up there, and whatever." Scouts have rated Campbell's early-spring control as a 6; at the start of last spring, it was a 9.
Sure, it's early, but it looks like it might be another long season for the Flubbers.
Hate every moment of it.

That's too bad about Nathan. He had *terrific* "potential." I'm not sure how the game engine develops pitchers, but I have loads of guys who haven't and maybe won't develop their full control potential and several whose control talent dipped this off season. Interesting to see how Romero develops.

Izatt is reportedly mumbling about his 0-3 start.

Check that, now 0-5...despite a 4.1 ERA, pretty decent control and 2 complete games. Lack of run support, anyone????

Izatt is overrated with his post-injury ('99) ratings. The only thing more frustrating than watching him pitch is trying to get Spitulski to leave an all-you-can-eat salad bar.

What can I say? I love the potential threat of e.coli. Yum.
But I don't think you have much room to talk, sir. In fact, what's up with this footage I found of you celebrating your last dinner out at the local Frisch's???

Romero only signed with us because I threw in citizenship. That and maybe we are on the decline at a slightly slower rate. Notice I said slightly.

That seems to imply that Louisville was at one point on an incline...
