Slugger Shavings 2057.6 - Brewing Excitement

Post by RT60 » Mon Jan 22, 2024 9:52 pm

The 2057 season was a disappointment for the Sluggers. Only 72 wins, massive injuries to its star pitching prospects, and the retirement of a team legend. And the team had to watch rival Nashville win a title. As fans get ready to hibernate for the winter, is there anything positive to look forward to during their long slumber? I think so, to wit:

Cade Miller was called up towards the end of the season and injected some life into the bullpen. The team's 35th overall pick in 2051 has been flying under the radar in the Slugger's farm system, but had a great year in AAA finishing third in reliever of the year voting. The 26-year-old pitched in 15 games for Louisville to finish the season, putting up a very solid 2.97 ERA and 1.02 WHIP. The future looks bright for Miller, which is a great news for a bullpen that struggled mightily in 2057.

Kwakou might be gone, but that just creates opportunity. Many fans are betting that Gary Grant will be moved up to Louisville to take over 1B. Originally a 9th round pick in 2052 by Des Moines, Grant was acquired in a trade in 2056 with San Antonio that saw Antonio Baldez leave the team. Grant probably would have stayed another year in AAA had Kwakou not retired, but the Sluggers have few options. Despite sporting a wicked 'stache, it just doesn't seem that 1B Mike Fowler will ever be more than a supplemental player.

And of course the heralded return of the injured Don Starr and Ford Prefect will hopefully right the ship with respect to the starting rotation. Losing those two for the season was a huge blow, so getting them back should restore some balance to the universe.

You've got a ton of young talent in your rotation and your team dramatically underperformed their Pythag W/L. You're my sleeper pick heading into the offseason if you can make some supplemental moves.
