Slugger Shavings 2045.05 - Spring Training Decisions - 1B

Post by sjshaw » Mon Nov 23, 2020 2:28 pm

Our organizational preference has evolved to bringing in one of the million 1B available in free agency on a 1-year deal and letting them mash. We generally don't like spec 1B, and our attempts at long-term 1B relationships have been short-lived (see Quicker, Ross, and Terada, Yunosuke). The cap crunch imposed this season by KWAK's balloon year kept us from pouncing on any of the logical FA targets, until we reluctantly cut Brett White and his $8m from our ledger, so the 1B room might change from the below. We're planning on a platoon regardless, unless a star can be gotten cheaply.

One good thing about 1B is how many players can play it passably. While the below guys are "pure" 1B, we do have several other options who could slide to 1B if that makes the most sense, and we'll discuss them in future posts detailing their primary position.

1B Edgardo Díaz - Will the real Diaz step forward? Is he the LHP masher of 2043, when he put up 1.2 WAR in 91 starts? Or the guy from last year who completely floundered in 120 games? He did get BABIPed pretty hard last season, but his ISO went from .261 to .171. A 1B cannot have a .171 ISO unless he's giving you a .380 wOBA. It's just not going to work. We plan to plant him on the short side, rather than let him face RHP like he did last season, and see what happens.

1B Toby Hanscombe - That leaves the long side open to all comers, and Hanscombe will get a chance in ST to seize it. A Rule 5 acquisition who then got "de-Rule-5-ified" in a trade-back deal, Hanscombe and his B-movie villain facial hair will be able to develop in the minors for the future if the present doesn't work out.

Maga is so under-the-radar that I can't even link him. He's only coming to Spring to reward him for winning the WL MVP trophy and mashing AA pitching last season.
