Slugger Shavings 2044.06 - Infield Decisions

Post by sjshaw » Thu Sep 03, 2020 5:18 pm

We pulled this article from the publication funnel after last night's blockbuster deal with Mexico City. With Godzilla taking his talents and bank account to MEX, a coveted opening in the Slugger infield has appeared.

Prior to Godzilla's departure, there was no talk of change in LOU's infield. The same group that won the title last year was simply assumed to return, and the only interesting question was whether the BBA's #2 overall prospect 2B/3B Luis Mendoza could snag a backup job in Spring Training.

The Godzilla deal makes Mendoza's appearance in a Slugger uniform much more likely this season, but GM Shaw maintains that only several injuries could avert service-time manipulation with the star prospect. The fake BBA player's union has lodged a fake grievance against the team, but we will bribe the fake arbitrator with real money and sex workers to resolve the fake case.

The left side of the infield remains the same. 3B Rafael 'Big Time' Gutiérrez and his girthy stick mans 3B and trade catnip SS Juan 'Juanny Baseball' Medrano will again start at SS. Both of them come with caveats, though. Rumors are swirling that Gutiérrez may be traded during the season to make room for Mendoza, and Medrano has yet to really break out into superstardom with his tremendous eye. By all accounts, Medrano should be surpassing a .400 OBP and putting up gaudy defensive numbers, but the 23-year-old hasn't fully come into his powers yet. Perhaps this will be the year.

Backing up Gutiérrez and Medrano is... well, it's kind of a mess. Let's not think about it.

On the right side, 2B Jorge MORAN hopes to put last year behind him and replicate his 4.2 WAR breakout 2042 season. MORAN can back up 1B capably if needed, and manning that spot will be mid-season trade acquisition 1B Edgardo Díaz. Diaz's performance, especially in the postseason, forced our hand with Godzilla. Diaz would have to faceplate pretty effing hard to lose this chance.
