The report is good going into June (2038-8)

June 10th, 2038

Two wins more in May than April but still 16 losses. Could be better, could be worse. We’ll need to up the ante a bit if we are to beat last year’s total of 69 wins and a good start to June is promising. Series wins over Atlantic City and New Orleans puts us at 6-3 for the month, with the promise of more to come. The rest of the month we face Montreal, Nashville, Huntsville, San Antonio and Atlantic City again, all sides currently swimming in the same sort of pool as we are. A good haul from these series could make or break our season, I daren’t look ahead though as a balanced month like this probably means a month is coming up against the top sharks who are really going to make us pay.

Victor Elizondo is back from his DL stint and finally gets to pitch for us, his first four bullpen outings are promising as he gives up three hits and just one run. Kevin Morales is having one of his best seasons in a while, his current pace would see him around the 18-win mark and 170 K’s. Figures he hasn’t seen for a few years. The sharks continue to circle for him, but I just can’t see the return on him being enough to compensate for the loss of our one true ace who’s under a pretty decent contract into his thirties. If only Pepe Jaramillo would find his form too, he has just three wins from 13 starts, the worst in the rotation so far. Carlos Guzman has a winning record and could well have double-digit wins and 100+ K’s at the end of the season, both career highs for him. Ken Bates meanwhile has picked up a bit of form and is receiving some run support at last, he’s on a two-game win streak at the moment and has only surrendered three runs in those two games. Young 21-yr-old prospect Augusto Sanchez is holding down the final rotation spot quite well with a record of 2-2 from seven starts, certainly better than any of the young pitchers we have tried to bring up in recent times. Carlos Rosa is returning to the stopper role, his wobble he had after returning from his long injury seems behind him now and his last ten appearances have seen him give up just six hits with a solitary run. Lando Klomp moves back to the setup role and although he too hasn’t done a lot wrong recently, he has three blown saves, five losses and an ERA just below six for the season.

21-yr-old Joey O’Brien is also flying, this season so far he has 22 multi-hit games and has three or more hits in eight games. Comfortably hitting over .300 all season he is looking to set some career marks this season. 23-yr-old Ricardo Tavares who hit 13 homers in 91 games during his rookie season last year has now added 12 more in 60 appearances this year although his defence at Second could do with sharpening up. Jaime Ramirez isn’t quite at the level too that brought him an JL Yogi Zimmer Diamond Glove Award at 3B in his first season last year at the hot corner but it’s acceptable. His offensive numbers too are slightly down while Maximo Quezada since being given the DH role has a five-game hitting streak going and has hit two homers in that period. He is though well down on last years totals. 23-yr-old Pedro Saldana has just played his 500th BBA game and should pass 300 runs scored and 300 driven in this year.

An optimistic report this time which will probably have to be balanced by a ‘doom & gloom’ one next time out. The new draftees have just arrived and look a real rag-tag bunch, partly due to me being away over the draft period, the exception being first-round pick 19-yr-old Ronnie Hubbard. He looks a decent centre fielder and once he signs will start at A ball Ocala. His future Slugger outfield partner, 18-yr-old Semei Kwakou, has just been promoted to Double-A after hitting .342/.380/.660 at Ocala and I look forward to seeing the two teenagers together in the outfield for Daytona in the Florida Prospect League.
