The 2037 Florida Prospect League standouts (2038-1)

Post by Fat Nige » Sat Mar 02, 2019 6:13 am

November 2037

Another year is in the books for the Florida Prospect League and the Daytona Sluggers returned to winning ways in 2037. After their first losing season in 2036 where they slipped to fifth and lost 17 out of the 28 games, they posted a 16-12 record this year and finished second. Starting off with a 0-16 defeat to Fort Lauderdale (who did go on to a 22-6 record) things looked bad when they suffered a one-run loss next game but a 4-1 win in the third game got things back on track. In fact, they never lost more than two in a row this season and finished off with their own emphatic win, beating Naples by the score of 20-4. They also had a three-game spell when they only allowed one run. Unfortunately, they only won two (3-0, 8-0) as they lost the first of the three 0-1.

21-yr-old Shinzo Nagai, a ninth-round pick in 2033 by San Antonio, had a busy year cumulating in his FPL outing. He started 2037 in Shreveport, the Outlaws A-ball affiliate, before being cut by them after 29 appearances. Mid-June the Sluggers picked him up, in a busy second half of the season he made six appearances in Ocala, 21 for Louisville’s Double-A Fire and finally 21 for Triple-A Missouri. To cap it all off we sent him to the FPL where he took his total number of games for 2037 to 99 with 22 FPL appearances. The left fielder made a good impression there hitting .349/.402/.616 with five homers & 19 RBI while scoring 17 times. He also drew nine walks while only striking out six times. He led the team in batting average & homers but was beaten into second in RBI by 22-yr-old Louisville Fire’s first baseman Octavio Alvarado who drove in 24 runs in his 25 appearances. The third star with the bat was 20-yr-old centrefielder Antonio Cordero. He split 2037 between A ball and Double-A before making 25 appearances in the FPL. He hit three homers, 17 RBI, walked 10 times and stole successfully seven times in 10 attempts. All three will receive non-roster invites to Spring Training in recognition of their achievements here but only Nagai has a real possibility of starting 2038 above Double-A.

The pitcher that stood out was 21-yr-old Alfredo Acosta, he had split the year between SS-A Caracas (3-1, 3.45) and AA Louisville Fire (2-1, 2.10). The 2034 10th round pick finished off his third pro year with six starts in the FPL where he went 5-0 with a 2.44 ERA; he also struck out 47 batters in 44 innings pitched while walking just four. 18-yr-old Castel Perez, a 2036 third-rounder from Costa Rica, added the FPL to rookie ball, SS-A and A ball as leagues he had played in during 2037. He went 1-2 in six starts with a 3.59 ERA but the most pleasing thing was the youngster lowered his BB/9 & HR/9 whilst improving his K/9 (he struck out 42 in 42 IP in the FPL). Another pitcher standing out was 21-yr-old Hungarian Jani Forsbacka (a 2033 scouting discovery), he posted a 3-1 record from five starts and struck out 32 batters in 33 innings pitched

The best thing is that most of the aforementioned players will be probably making another FPL roster next year with none of them being over 22-yrs-old then and hopefully all of them casting envious eyes at a 2039 Triple-A slot.
