Wheels come off (2037-13)

August 11th, 2037

“The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round . . . . . . “

Until they come off in a huge blast of pressure and the bus skids along in a trail of sparks towards the vast precipice on it’s belly with no means of control. The events of July and now August has left every Sluggers fan beating the ground in frustration. After two successive months above .500 July was a ride on the biggest big dipper. Louisville opened the month with just three wins in the first 14 games including a losing streak of seven games before snapping that and going on a six-game winning tear. Sluggers ended July 11-15 for the month in the midst of a win one, lose one funk as August arrived with a punch on the nose. A five-game losing streak helped them to the 3-7 record that they currently have for the month but most frustrating is that four of the last five losses have been by single run margins. Louisville started the Month eight games below .500 and fourth in the division, handily placed within a game & a half of the other three side at the wrong end of the Southeast division and now they’re once more anchored to the foot of the division. New Orleans have gone on an 8-2 tear putting them six and a half games ahead of Sluggers while former bottom side Huntsville have matched that streak leaving us two & a half games adrift. For the moment despite our woes over the last five to six weeks the fans have stuck with Louisville, the average attendance is up over 8% to almost 26,700 and the revenue per game is up over 14% on last year’s figures.

Kevin Morales has recovered from his early injury setbacks to be the only starter with a winning record although all of the rotation are a hot-streak away from .500. Rookie, Rule-5, selection Carlos Guzman is still performing above expectations with a 9-10 record in 17 starts, if only he could improve his command at the plate and reverse his 57/67 K/BB ratio he might have a better record in 2038. Since the start of July the young 22-yr-old rookie closer Axel Goulding has cooled off and hit the skids by blowing four save opportunities as well as getting tagged with three loses. With the setup men only getting a loss and a blown save it might be time to take the rookie out of the fire for a while and let Lando Klomp take a bit of the heat.

While the averages might not be spectacular the power men of Louisville have at least been living up to the team’s nickname. 23-yr-old Jose Vazquez, in his second full BBA season, is one long ball away from 30 and is one of four batters to pass 100 hits so far. Shag Hopkins & the surprising Scott Martin are both second in the homer race, both on 22, it’s Hopkin’s fourth straight 20+ home run season and Martin’s first real season that he has established a consistent streak as a starter in the outfield. Jaime Ramirez is now playing virtually as good a defensive role at the hot corner as he used to at shortstop while still producing with the bat as well as on the basepaths where he has stolen successfully in 42 out of 49 attempts. 20-yr-old rookie Joey O’Brien has proved as capable a defender at short and hopefully in the years to come will improve with the bat where he’s really only league average at the moment. First baseman Pedro Debesa is pushing the boundaries of his career figures in his second full year and needs one homer for his first BBA 20-homer season. The emergence of 23-yr-old Ricardo Tavares at second has led to Gabriel Talamante getting less than 200 PA’s in what could be his final year in Louisville.
