Sinking like a stone (2037-9)

Post by Fat Nige » Thu Dec 27, 2018 4:21 am

May 4th, 2037

The second half of April really confirmed that the Sluggers season was as good as over already. On the night of the last report Kevin Morales strained an oblique and is expected to be on the D/L until June time, the next day Carlos Rosa suffered a partially torn UCL and is lost for the season. Abay Omoruyi suffered two different day-to-day injuries over the course of that week and currently has no timetable to return and on the first day of May Doug Clement, who had been restored to the rotation in Kevin Morales place fractured his elbow and in all likelihood wonÂ’t pitch again this season.

While all this injury carnage was going on the results were steadily heading for another terrible season. Lowlights were a four-game sweep by San Antonio as well as a three-game sweep by Jacksonville, both at home while at least away from home Louisville managed to sneak in three wins at Atlantic City. All of which left Sluggers rooted to the foot of the JL Southeast Division with a 9-20 record, five games behind Nashville who were just above them and 7 1⁄2 out of first. They had only won five of 22 games at home and were bottom or second bottom of the entire Johnson League in 10 of all stats categories. The only category that they came close to shining in was defensive efficiency where they ranked sixth.

Pepe Jaramillo now led the rotation, and after last yearÂ’s 7-14 record he is 0-4 already after six starts. Rookie Brendon Carr has failed to live up to any of his Spring Training promise and after going 0-4 with an 8.13 ERA has been moved to the bullpen. Ramon Gaza has returned to a rotation spot but in three starts is 0-2 while Lando Klomp and two rookies, Axel Goulding & Douglas Wils have been called up from Triple-A Missouri to fill the many injury gaps. Five of the bullpen currently have ERAÂ’s between 7.99 and 11.81 while four of the pitching staff have a BB/9 over four. The one bright spot is Rule 5 pick Carlos Guzman, so nearly returned to Calgary after Spring, has at least being doing well in the bullpen posting a 3-1 record with a team leading 2.14 ERA. He will be tried in the rotation in May as Louisville try to sort the mess out.

Pushed along by improving backup catcher Hector Torres, Shag Hopkins leads the team with a .289 batting average and seven homers. Pedro Debesa & Jaime Ramirez lead the way with 13 runs scored but only six batters have reached the double-digit plateau in runs scored. Patience at the plate isnÂ’t LouisvilleÂ’s strong point right now, the most walks have been drawn by Lou Cotton with 7 but one of the three players who have six is surprisingly Maximo Quezada who has also managed to strike-out on 40 of his 102 ABÂ’s.

Despite all the shuttle buses between Missouri and Louisville the Blues have remained one game ahead of their division rivals. Leading the way there are 22-yr-old second baseman Ricardo Tavares, hitting .374 with 10 homers & 31 RBI while 24-yr-old Masahiko Ito as the #5 starter has four wins and a loss in six starts.

It is very difficult to stay competitive when injuries occur, especially to your pitching.
