Stamp out those Lucky Strikes (2037-8)

Monday April 13th, 2037

Strikes? Lucky Strikes? Smokers used to like these didn’t they? Not so much Louisville fans though. As Sluggers painfully slow start to 2037 continued their fans were cursing the ‘not so’ lucky strikes their players were collecting. In the last five games Louisville batters have struck out 51 times while only registering 49 hits. Not exactly a recipe for success is it?

And so it proved as the only win for Sluggers was the final game in Montreal after they sneaked by the Blazers 5-4 in the 14th innings. San Fernando were already 7-0 up before Louisville got on the board in a 10-5 loss before two 5-3 losses (one in the 10th innings) served up their first ‘swept at home’ series. Not much better hope for the Las Vegas series either as the Hustlers were 8-0 up in three innings before a 5-run seventh innings made the scoreline flatter them. Next week the Sluggers finish off the Las Vegas series and then complete their homestand with four against the 5-5 San Antonio Outlaws.

Second time through the rotation and no-one has a win yet. Pepe Jaramillo and Brendon Carr have ERA’s north of 10 while Julio Barajas has one north of eight. Only Kevin Morales shines out like a beacon with a 1.46 ERA, but still he has two no-decisions in his two starts. Ramon Garza and Doug Clement are the only two bullpen arms showing their true worth out of the seven there but it’s probably odds-on that Clement will be returning to the rotation if the current state of affairs continues.

Home runs by Shag Hopkins in the final two games of the week was probably the highlight of a poor week. Five RBI from Jose Vazquez was the only other highlight. Six of the hitters failed to hit more than .231, five of the batters stole a single base and two of those only had a 50% rate as the Sluggers couldn’t even raise a decent running game to play small ball in that attempt to score some more runs. After just 10 games Louisville has a near -30 RD and Defensive Efficiency (9th) is the only stat the Sluggers are ranked in the top ten of the Johnson League.

All three minor league affiliates currently in season slipped to third in their divisions. Missouri & Louisville with 7-5 records while Ocala has a 4-8 record. Ricardo Tavares who has had brief cups of coffee with Sluggers & Wichita is flying for Missouri with six homers and 14 RBI in 12 games. Louisville Fire (AA) has managed to win five of their last eight games despite having four on the disabled list already. The Gulf Coast A-ball division is looking a complete shambles with the leader being Shreveport on 3-6, Lake City & Ocala being on 4-8, Fort Worth on 3-9 and Tulsa holding them all up with a 1-7 record.
