Gearing up for another year (2037-3)

It probably wasn’t a smart idea but with the money situation very tight for the next two to three years Louisville dived into the International Free Agent market and came up with the most expensive fish of Laverick’s reign so far. On the fourth of January 2037 16-yr-old French outfielder Theo Bourges agreed a minor league deal with a $6,900,000 bonus and headed for the Sluggers International Complex. He might not have many defensive skills at the moment but he’s lightening quick allowing him to have a considerable range in the outfield. His arm is reasonable although probably not good enough to make a success in right field. At the press conference announcing the signing on the eve of Spring Training GM Nigel Laverick said that the plan was for Bourges to spend a year or two, depending on his progress, in the International Complex before heading at a young age to Bowling Green. With the scouts raving about his potential contact, gap and power skills the franchise fully believe he could be the future centre fielder of the next decade for the team.

Bourges, a $6.9 million boy, could make or break the bank

Meanwhile back in the ‘Bigs’ as Spring Training rapidly approaches it’s time to look at what the club will be trying during the month long camp. Shag Hopkins is firmly ensconced as the #1 catcher in terms of experience and contract with Hector Torres almost certain to be his backup due to his leadership skills in a camp where that is sorely lacking. With 20-yr-old Joey O’ Brien showing in his first BBA cup of coffee that he could well be ready to take on the mantle of Jaime Ramirez’s shortstop role it is believed that Louisville is looking at perhaps sliding Ramirez left to the hot corner with O’Brien as SS and using Lou Cotton or Sean Maguire at Second as Gabriel Talamante may not be back for 2038. The team are relatively happy with Pedro Debesa & Jose Vazquez in the 1B/DH roles but Yoshitake Saikawa, acquired from Wichita in the George Lee Anderson V trade, will get a look in those roles in his first year on the 40-man roster. The Sluggers would like to get a bit more hitting out of these roles against LHP but are not sure they have the personnel to do that this year. Doug Glover Jr & Gustavo Gutierrez will also probably get a bench role again by default as Louisville have not invited anyone to camp who would challenge them.

In the outfield Pedro Saldana and Vince Osborn are more or less locked into what will be their third year in the corner spots while free agent signing Maximo Quezada will be the latest to try out for the centre field job while sophomore Abay Omoruyi will be looking to show that he could be good enough to keep that job ahead of Quezada. A collection of familiar rag-tag outfielders will once more be jostling for the OF backup outfield roles while Calvin Clohessy is once more guaranteed a roster spot due to his utility defensive prowess.

The rotation will more than likely be the same as in 2036. The franchise will be crossing their fingers & toes that Kevin Morales & Pepe Jaramillo recover their mo-jo and once more provide a strong one-two punch. Mike Singleton & Julio Barajas are expected to once more be in the bottom half of the order but lefty Doug Clement’s position could be under threat after a truly miserable 2036. Top pitching prospect, 20-yr-old Augusto Sanchez (2034 round three draft pick), will be in camp as will Sean Gardner, Douglas Wils & Brendon Carr who were all acquired in trades in 2035. They will have their chances as will Wilson Padilla, a 2031 8th round draft pick, but it is felt they are all a year away from being ready so the biggest chance of breaking into the rotation probably falls to Rule 5 pick Carlos Guzman. Louisville will no doubt though be keeping a close eye on the waiver wire at the end of the Spring camps looking for a cheap arm that might grab a rotation slot. A slew of young arms will be vying for a spot in the bullpen with one of the most likely to gain a spot is 22-yr-old Axel Goulding who has done well the last two years at the back end of bullpens in Double-A & Triple-A. Again though most of them are thought to be a year or so away with the incumbent arms probably retaining their slots. That said Spring is the time of opportunities, anybody can burst from the pack and secured an unexpected spot.
