The Rule 5 draft and a free agent signing (2037-2)

As Louisville started planning for the Rule 5 draft it was a tale of two catchers on the wavier wire. 25-yr-old catcher, Sifal Smerdon, acquired from Brooklyn in the Fernando Cruz trade was waived to remove him from the 40-man roster and was subsequently claimed by Mexico City. Smerdon had just five games for the Sluggers at BBA level collecting four hits, one double, three RBI and scoring once. To replace him at Triple-A Missouri Louisville claimed 25-yr-old Bill Peterson from Brooklyn, in two spells at BBA level he has made 55 appearances hitting 8 doubles, three homers with 18 RBI and a career .242 batting average.

Half a dozen players were signed to minor league contracts to replace the various departures and retirees before the Rule 5 draft. Pitchers Cipriano Campos & Dylan Schmidt were waived and designated for assignment to clear their 40-man roster spots while 22-yr-old RP Domingo Ochoa, 21-yr-old RP Ignacio Castaneda, 22-yr-old CL Axel Goulding and 22-yr-old SP Sean Gardner were all added to the 40-man to protect them in the R5 draft. After having quite a few selected in the R5 draft last year just two went this year, Mexico selected 23-yr-old catcher Abbas Maulana who had 203 appearance at Double-A for the Louisville organisation while Jacksonville selected 21-yr-old CL Andino Bianchi who had 129 outings at Double-A going 8-10 with 13 saves and a 3.89 career ERA at that level. Sluggers added one this year when they selected 24-yr-old pitcher Carlos Guzman fourth overall in the draft from Calgary. Guzman made his first 20 starts at Double-A level last year going 7-4 with a 3.98 ERA. His 62/59 K/BB ratio will have to improve but he only allowed nine homers in 115 IP and is expected to challenge for the fifth starter’s role in Spring Training.

Free Agent signing Maximo Quezada could well be Sluggers starting CF in 2037

In the last day of 2036 Louisville signed what could well be their one and only free agent signing of the off-season. 27-yr-old CF Maximo Quezada signed a three-year $13.95 million deal, although only the first year is guaranteed with Sluggers holding team options for 2038 and 2039. Quezada has made 796 BBA appearances so far, first with Charm City and recently with Omaha, hitting a career .238 batting average with 160 homers, 403 RBI and has scored 400 times. Kentucky Truck Plant Stadium’s layout might well help him increase his homers and the Sluggers willingness to run will suit his speed, he has 207 BBA career steals from 284 attempts. Moist importantly he has proved to be over the last two years at CCJ & Omaha a solid CF with a positive ZR and a def eff over 1.000 both years as well as being charged with only five errors. The salary is a little bit more than Louisville would have liked but they had to fight off interest from Mexico City and at least it’s only one guaranteed year.
