August Review (2036-9)

Post by Fat Nige » Mon Nov 19, 2018 2:12 am

Five months into the season Louisville finally opened a month with two wins rather than two losses when they hung two defeats on Phoenix making them 5-2 in the last seven games. It didn’t really matter though as the Sluggers were still 45=63 overall and six and a half games away from even getting off the foot of the JL Southeast. Maybe they realised that as they promptly lost 3 out of four in Mexico City, partying on the plane out as they had only been outscored 25-20. Headed to Long Beach they lost the series there too and the downward season continued. Only three times in the month did they manage consecutive wins and finished August winning just nine out of 26 games. Injuries were starting to bite, utility backup Calvin Clohessy had been injured late July and after suffering a setback recovering from his sprained ankle would not feature at all in the Month. Carlos Rosa strained his hamstring mid-month and the stopper would be missing until well into September while reliever Vasil Buurman’s finger blister meant he couldn’t pitch the back-end of the month, not that that was a great loss as he had an 0-4 record with an ERA north of seven.

Lando Klomp at least averaged over two strikeouts per outing during August but only had one win in relief to show for it

With the return of Felipe Chavez from April’s bone chips he took his spot in the rotation while Ramon Gaza headed back to Double-A. That didn’t help any as Chavez went 1-3 on his six starts and had an 18/17 K/BB ratio. Kevin Morales at least managed a 2-2 record but everyone else plain sucked. Mike Singleton went 0-2 with an ERA of 7.03, Julio Barajas went 0-3 while Pepe Jaramillo at least, I suppose, had a win to go with his three losses. Carlos Rosa had the best record as he went 3-2 with two saves and a hold but there again he didn’t pitch after August 14th thanks to his injury. Rookie Yasuoka Okamura had a go at taking the closer’s role but in five innings he was 0-1 with two saves & an ERA of 28.80 thanks to Jacksonville putting five on the board in a third of an innings and California scoring three without him registering an out. Lando Klomp plodded well in the set-up role, getting into ten games, going 1-0, posting a 21/4 K/BB ratio but not picking up any saves or holds.

Pedro Saldana had a solid month at least too. He was one of four Sluggers that hit four homers in August, led the team with 18 RBI and a batting average of .320 while successfully stealing on all his four attempts. Gabriel Talamante led in homers with a pitiful six but did get his batting average as high as .211. Jaime Ramirez joined Vince Osborn and Sean Maguire in scoring 15 runs during the month and kept up his good streak on the base paths successfully stealing 11 bases in 12 attempts. In other noteworthy news the clubhouse was in uproar over what they felt was a lack of leadership so back-up catcher Jose Burgos headed for Triple-A Missouri to be replaced by 23-yr-old Hector Torres who had a great deal of leadership skills in his young head. That left the clubhouse then complaining about a lack of veteran leadership. His four starts produced a .250 average, two singles, a double with two RBI and two walks
