May Review (2036-6)

Post by Fat Nige » Wed Nov 14, 2018 4:11 pm

May opened as pleasantly as you could expect in this car-wreck of a season. 24,000 odd saw Louisville defeat Atlantic City 9-7 in the first game of a double header but not until Carlos Rosa had blown the save by allowing two runs to tie it in the top of the ninth. A walk-off 2-run homer by Shag Hopkins clinched the win in the bottom half of the innings. Then the 2036 curse struck again in the second game. Gamblers took starter Julio Barajas to task scoring five in each of the first two innings and knocking him out after scoring three in the third. Sluggers only two runs came in the bottom of the sixth on three hits but the visitors iced the cake in the top of the ninth. A three-run homer and a two-run homer sealed a seven-run innings and a 20-2 win.

The month didn’t quite get as nasty as April but not far off it as Louisville turned in just 11 wins in 29 games. Mid-month they equaled 2036’s best winning streak when they took two successive games of Atlantic City but at least May’s worst was only a four-game losing streak which they performed twice. Louisville also split a four-game series with Wichita at the back end of the month. The closest they had come to winning a series against the new team of the Sluggers former GM. Also at least only five of the 18 losses were by more than three runs.

Mike Singleton in his sophomore season won three games in May, the same amount as he won in 2035 after his callup

Last year Mike Singleton won his rotation spot posting a 3-1 record as a September call-up and now this May he led the team with a 3-1 record in his six starts, giving up 42 hits and 13 earned runs in 40 IP. Doug Clement went 2-2 in his five starts but the other three rotation members – Kevin Morales, Pepe Jaramillo & Julio Barajas were a combined 3-11 in their 18 starts. Rookie Yasuoka Okamura, acquired last August from Wichita, impressively held opponents to a .114 batting average and just four hits in his 11 IP and came through May with a 1-0 record with five holds credited.

Rookie Abay Omoruyi led the team in batting average in April and he repeated the feat in May hitting .286/.342/.429 in the 10 games he managed before heading for the D/L with a sore elbow. Only four starters hit over .250 as the Sluggers failed to slug with Pedro Saldana, Shag Hopkins & Gabriel Talamante hitting way below the Mendoza Line. Despite that Hopkins & Talamante hit nine of Louisville’s meagre total of 17 homers. Doubles weren’t much better with Talamante & Vince Osborn hitting just six each to lead the team in May. Jaime Ramirez ran his season total to 20 stolen bases with 11 more but was caught his first two times of 2036. Meanwhile Saldana learned from April and turned his 8 from 19 attempts into a perfect 10 as he succeeded with all his 10 attempts.
