Minor League Notes pt.1 - Missouri & Alabama (2036-3)

Missouri Blues

A lot of former Blues were serving time in the BBA this season so it was a tribute to the system that only fell from 77 wins to 67 wins, although the season was reduced from 150 games to 135. Manager Callum Hopkins, in his first in Missouri but eighth in the organisation, shuffled the pack well and although the pitching & batting proved mediocre, the Defensive Eff of the Blues was third in the Roundfield League. A six-game losing streak in the final days of the season robbed them of a finish above .500.

On the pitching side both Julio Barajas & Mike Singleton made just over 20 starts before their successful promotion to the Sluggers, both posting a winning record. Brendon Carr & Dylan Schmidt newly-acquired in mid-season trades will certainly boost the Blues in 2036 as will Douglas Wils who will be getting his first taste of Triple-A after a successful year at Double-A and the Florida Prospect League. Batting wise Lou Cotton and Doug Glover, Jr were two of the four Blues that hit double-digit homers but are expected to be full-time Sluggers from now on while Abay Omoruyi was the only Blue with 100 or more hits (101). Abay also hit 11 homers and legged out 15 doubles. Only two players though reached double-digit base steals, Carlos Sandoval and Javier Tavarez both stole 14, and Hopkins will be tasked with improving this. Sluggers most promising shortstop, Joey O’Brien, reached Triple-A with five tentative starts gaining three hits from 22 AB’s; he could well be the Blues starting shortstop in 2036 if he can handle it as Gustavo Gutierrez may well do enough in ST to clinch a backup role in Louisville.

2035 Pitcher of the Year: Julio Barajas – 22 GS, 8-5 W-L, 4.15 ERA, 105/26 K/BB, 2.5 WAR

2035 Batter of the Year: 2B Lou Cotton – 95 G, 99 H, 62 R, 19 HR, 57 RBI, 20 BB, .262/.304/.492, 2.5 WAR

Alabama Slammers (Louisville Fire)

In the team’s final year in Alabama they played nine games less and fell from 76 wins to 62 wins. After 41 years in Alabama the Sluggers’ Double-A affiliate is moving to Louisville for 2036 to play in a brand-new field, situated on the site of the Sluggers former Waterfront Park, as part of the Waterfront Development Complex. In 5,051 games in Alabama they won 2,431 games (.481 pct), reached the playoffs 10 times and won just one championship. 23,215,939 people passed through the gates in that time.

Benjamin O’Rorke will be the manager of the new Louisville Fire, having overseen the Slammers in 2035 and A Ball Ocala in 2034. It will be difficult in 2036 with a lot of the players that started 2035 in Alabama now playing in the BBA and Triple-A but the Fire will be hoping that their first season in Louisville will be a successful one. The batters showed that they could have been higher with a team batting average of .279, 1281 hits and only 732 strikeouts all rating second in the Drake League, unfortunately the pitching staff stats were all in the bottom third of the League. Hopefully O’Rorke and pitching coach Chris Bax, now in his seventh year in the Louisville Double-A affiliate, will be able to help the Class of ‘36 pitchers to improve that. Once more they will be a very young pitching staff as the Louisville mantra has always been “If you’re good enough, you’re old enough”. In fact, only 12 of the entire Louisville minor league system is over the age of 24.

Fernando Castro was the only pitcher to reach 10 wins and the only starter remaining that posted a winning record at Double-A, Eisaku Matsumoto posted an 8-5 record but refused to extend his minor league contract and left as a free agent. German Lopez went 7-9 starting 19 out of 32 appearances and stuck out 92 batters, a figure only bettered by Castro’s 114. Four of the batters hit 20 or more homers in 2035 but one, Octavio Alvarado, was lost in the Rule 5 draft and two others, Pedro Debesa & Lawrence De La Garza, are attending the Sluggers Spring Camp with Debesa expected to continue his mid-season promotion and Garza probably heading for Missouri. Second baseman Antonio Cruz led the team in hits with 131 from 110 appearances including 27 homers and 34 doubles; he also scored 81 runs and 89 RBI. Left fielder Antonio Rios’ 18 bag swipes was the team best, and management are keen to up the total number of team steals in 2036. Pedro Debesa made 96 appearances before being promoted to be Sluggers full-time first baseman and shortstop Joey O’Brien is not expected back either.

2035 Pitcher of the Year: Fernando Castro – 25 GS, 10-8 W-L, 3.78 ERA, 114-38 K/BB, 1.12 WHIP, 2.7 WAR

2035 Batter of the Year: Pedro Debesa – 96 G, 117 H, 21 HR, 63 RBI, 49 BB, .315/.400/.580, 3.1 WAR
