Spring training in Louisville in 2015 brought with it an unusual problem for the Sluggers...too much talent.
Its kind of a weird feeling.
So cuts leading into the season were based more on who had options, than rather who deserved a place in the Bigs.
You could argue that the AAA Missouri infield is better than the Sluggers opening day infield...or just as good...
First base
vs
Kevin Spencer v Gabriel Gomez
Kevin Spencer has had two excellent seasons since joining the Sluggers with an OPS of .860 and .804; he's in the prime of his career at thirty one years old. He's done nothing to warrant losing his position. And...sluggers genius GM just inked him to a 3 year, $22 million dollar contract in the off-season. Gabriel Gomez just may be the best hitter in the Sluggers entire organisation...today. He's a twenty-one year-old monster that has devastated pitching throughout his four year march through the minor leagues. And...the Sluggers can't plug one of them into to DH because they already got a few guys earmarked for there...
Second base
v
Torston Boss v Callum Hopkins
Torston Boss has developed into a solid second baseman, and has shown that he may make an even better third baseman in the future. The twenty-seven year-old, four year MBBA veteran has improved each and every season, culminating in last season's .823 OPS. Twenty-four year-old Callum Hopkins has improved his OPS every year in the minors, as he went up each rung on the organisational ladder. He projects to strike out a ton, but hit for decent power and play effective defense at second base.
Third base
v
Devin Clark v Alfonso Espinosa
The thirty-three year-old face of the franchise for the past 8 looonnngggg disappointing seasons...Clark had the worst season of his career in 2014, (.700 OPS). But Clark is entering his contract year and figures to rebound nicely from such a poor season...and you just can't ditch the only recognizable name off of the roster. Twenty-three year-old Espinosa is a vacum cleaner at third base, and can run like the wind. He figures to get on base a respectable amount of time with his career .750 AAA minors OPS.
Shortstop
v
Ben Forga v Sam Hampton
Twenty-six year-old second baseman, Ben Forga, wrestled the starting Sluggers shortstop position off of incumbent, Eddo Hopstaken mid-season 2014, and shows no sign of relinquishing the job. Forga fielded the ball well above expectations and performed able enough at the plate (.674 OPS), although more is expected in 2015. Twenty-four year-old Sam Hampton probably edges both Hopostaken and Forga in the field but will likely hit a little worse.
Key Backup
v
Daryl Cumberbatch v Eddo Hopstaken
Twenty-seven year-old Cumberbatch carries with him the label of 'BUST' but is surprisingly adept at fielding all four infield positions...still, his career .653 OPS in almost 1000 career at-bats is not very promising. Cumberbatch's 'advantage' at hitting better against lefties gives him an edge over Hopstaken, as someone has to play for Boss at second base against the southpaws. Twenty-nine year-old Hopstaken has the edge at fielding shortstop, but doesn't field the other infield positions as well. His career .684 OPS in almost 1000 career at-bats isn't much better than Cumberbatch's.
Ten big league quality infielders...some stars..and only 5 available spots.

I'm sure these decisions were very hard for you as I know that you think everything with a pulse wearing a Sluggers uni is a stud.
I'm pretty excited for Gomez to finally make his debut, btw... you aren't planning to keep him in AAA all year are you?
