On a fine Spring day in 2057, the Sluggers made a momentous decision. They decided to draft Scottish-Romanian phenom John Coxtolstoy with the 16th overall pick. Many thought the team had made a mistake (so much so that the fans rioted in the streets), and that he was just being drafted because he was a friend of Alan's. But GM BP knew better. Plus, no one seemed to know who Alan was anyway.
"I knew John was going to be a game-changer. When we were interviewing him at his local country club, I watched him eat two steak sandwiches, not just one. And then he refused to have us pick up the tab, and instead charged it to someone named Underhill. I guess that must be his Uncle or something. Anyway, the guy was definitely a sparkplug," recalled GM BP.
Coxtolstoy started well in his career, rapidly yet evenly progressing through the Slugger's farm system. He had a nice combination of power and the ability to hit for average. While he will never be a threat on the base paths, he has a decent glove at first and third. With Don Hale fixed at third and Jose Barrera fixed at first, and with the DH role filled nicely by Ricardo Capeles, Coxtolstoy was happily spending most of 2062 in AAA Missouri helping the team lead their division. Then Capeles got hurt for the season.
Coxtolstoy jumped at his chance when he got the call. He took Capeles' DH spot and the team didn't miss a beat. He ended up playing in 64 games, hitting .307 with 13 home runs. The switch hitter hit well from both sides of the plate. With Capeles back next season, and with Hale and Barrera also returning, the big question is where will Coxtolstoy fit?
"We will find a place for John," noted GM BP. "The small yet mighty Scottish-Romanian contingent in Louisville will demand nothing else."
