Brains! 2059.2: "Development Lab" Sparks Hope, Protests in the Community

Post by aaronweiner » Mon Apr 22, 2024 8:42 am

Admist the smoldering wasteland that was once America is the BBA, the last bastion of entertainment in the age of nuclear fallout. But the brave owners of BBA teams are now going beyond mere entertainment, mere baseball. Each team has created something called a "development lab," meant to restore and perhaps even enhance human beings in the post-apocalyptic era. These new development labs have been met by the public with two reactions: hope, and fear. Some people are trying to straddle the fence between the two, rationalizing that this could be a good thing for humanity, who desperately needs hope, but could also end in calamity.

"Sure, we hope that the development labs are good for humanity. Don't we all want to get better, especially now?" posed local editorial writer Ingre Englem. "Our new bioluminescence has come in handy in so many situations, from showering in the dark to finding our keys to easier construction. But it is exactly this sort of dedication to advancement that pushed us into our current situation of despair, and it is healthy to fear advancement at this point."

The science for the development labs were developed by leading scientist Arcade Gannon, who works out of Las Vegas, still the home of the BBA's central offices. Gannon claims that the science merely creates better baseball players.

"We're just trying to see if we can get a guy to get a little more movement on his pitches," said Gannon. "Or a little more bat speed. Or a new pair of legs and wings. No, wait, just the first two - ignore the rest of that."

Protestors have been picketing the developmental labs for weeks now, day and night; night protests have also been made easier by bioluminescence. According to one protestor, information may be beginning to leak about these labs.

"We've had reports of increased strength, increased individual ability, but also diminishment and even withering of these proud young men," said protestor William Daresaweigh, holding a sign saying 'Stability, Not Development.' "We're just holding on right now, everywhere, and while we didn't want to eat the BBA players, we didn't want the BBA teams to contaminate them, either. They are one of our hopes for the future."

Reportedly, the teams are using the cover of making these players into better baseball players to try to see how humanity holds up in the new environment. They claim that their tests are primarily harmless, but, reportedly, some players have been going through changes. There are considerable concerns about how the teams are applying these treatments, which are a closely kept secret amongst BBA teams. Some people believe that they are introducing limited amounts of nuclear waste. Others believe they are using DNA from genetically modified insects, many of whom grew to a larger size in the irradiated environment, to try to repeat the considerable advantages these bugs now have. Still others believe that it's simply anabolic steroids and there is little to worry about other than steroids' usual side effects.

"We're not completely sure what's happening here or what will occur, and that's always a little scary," said Englem. "But we also don't really know what will happen tomorrow. Right now, all we can do is guess, and hope that the BBA Development Labs have our best interests at heart."
