Brains! 2059.1: In A Post-Apocalyptic Wasteland, The BBA Continues in Jacksonville - With a New Name

Post by aaronweiner » Sat Apr 20, 2024 3:09 pm

Most of the world is a radioactive wreckage, a fallout so severe, so outrageous, that most of the individuals left on Earth are unrecognizable, if still surprisingly fairly healthy. It was predicted that the world would eventually self-destruct, that humanity was on a perpetual track to "better itself" at the cost of "the status quo," which led to endless advancement. When the bombs dropped, most people just shrugged.

"That's just the way the world goes," said Zane-Oscar Michael Burson, chief amongst modern philosophers, broadcasting from his bunker in Connecticut on his podcast The Brains of the Operation. "Some people have thrived in the new normal, and some are simply left for the dogs of war, but most are just trying to make their way through, just like always."

A bright light shining through the other, very bright lights of radioactivity in the further distance is the Brewster Baseball Association, whose ballparks and cities were left miraculously, virtually untouched in the fallout, a rare source of wholesome entertainment amongst the Mad Max universe the rest of the world finds itself occupying. Still called the "national game" despite America's dissolution into warring regional factions, the one treaty that each of the territories now accepts is the landing of the planes that bring Felix Roman, Hector Cano, and Bob Anderson to entertain the masses.

"Fan interest has predictably dropped because of the fact that most people are still getting used to their bright green glow, but people still love their baseball," said Jacksonville broadcaster Blamar "Icon" Curie. "I mean, people were never a bunch of Einsteins, but I read somewhere that Einstein was concerned about this very thing. At least we don't need stadium lights at night anymore."

Jacksonville has continued supporting their team, primarily by not eating them, but also by going out to the ballpark. However, they had conditions. Hurricanes are now a travelling storm of melting radioactivity, and while the fallout has affected the wind patterns such that hurricanes are not as much of a problem as they were before, it is still a bit of a political hot button to discuss such a horrifying event. They demanded that the team create a new team identity, and they were only too happy to oblige. The team will now be called the Jacksonville Zombies.

Introducing the Jacksonville Zombies.

"This is the sort of thing that I fully support," said Jacksonville superfan (called this because he now has superpowers) Grub Noggin. "While I am admittedly trying to defend the city from real zombies, I also love the idea that we're embracing the world around us, and that really speaks to the new culture and the people living in it. Besides, what more fearsome name could we have?"

Naturally, in an apocalypse of this size, several players did not go unscathed. It appears Derek Dyce will hit free agency after his right arm fell off, a somewhat heartless maneuver, and many other players have seen their superstar track somewhat derailed. However, Jacksonville, amongst other BBA teams, will try to figure out what might be next in this Brave New World.

"We don't know exactly how things will work now, but it's going to be very exciting to find out," said Harbin Gner, Jacksonville's leading seer. "It will be difficult to predict exactly what will happen now, but hopefully the world can right itself and things will at least seem normal, maybe sometime soon."

An upgrade IMO. You’d have to be a zombie to want to live in Jacksonville ;)
